Fair Division

Fair Division

Cutting a cake, dividing up the property in an estate, determining the borders in an international dispute - such problems of fair division are ubiquitous. Fair Division treats all these problems and many more through a rigorous analysis of a variety of procedures for allocating goods (or 'bads' like chores), or deciding who wins on what issues, when there are disputes. Starting with an analysis of the well-known cake-cutting procedure, 'I cut, you choose', the authors show how it has been adapted in a number of fields and then analyze fair-division procedures applicable to situations in which there are more than two parties, or there is more than one good to be divided. In particular they focus on procedures which provide 'envy-free' allocations, in which everybody thinks he or she has received the largest portion and hence does not envy anybody else. They also discuss the fairness of different auction and election procedures.

An Introduction to Benford's Law

This book provides the first comprehensive treatment of Benford's law, the surprising logarithmic distribution of significant digits discovered in the late nineteenth century. Establishing the mathematical and statistical principles that underpin this intriguing phenomenon, the text combines up-to-date theoretical results with overviews of the law’s colorful history, rapidly growing body of empirical evidence, and wide range of applications. An Introduction to Benford’s Law begins with basic facts about significant digits, Benford functions, sequences, and random variables, including tools from the theory of uniform distribution. After introducing the scale-, base-, and sum-invariance ch...

The Probability Workbook

The best way to master probability is to work problems—lots of them. Through repeated practice, formerly fuzzy concepts begin to make sense, and solution strategies become clear. The Probability Workbook is a companion to The Probability Handbook, which covers counting techniques, probability rules, discrete probability distributions, and continuous probability distributions. This workbook offers more than 400 problems covering a wide range of probability techniques and distributions. From poker problems, to famous problems by luminaries in the field such as Pascal, Fermat, Bertrand, Fisher, and Deming, this one-of-a-kind book gives detailed numerical solutions and explanations presented in...

Rules of Chivalry for Nuclear War

This book is meant to be a guide book for warriors of they are willing to think 'out of the box'. It has some history, some fiction, some philosophy, some discussion of theology, some advice to young men about sex, and a little bit of physics. The center of the book is a proposal for "The Rules of Chivalry for Nuclear War" (The ROCNWAR). See Chapter 9 if you want to go directly to the proposal. The thrust of the book is that the characteristics of Chivalry are urgently needed when we engage in war. A major premise is that fighting is one of the four "F" functions of life: i.e., feeding, fleeing, fighting, and reproduction, and how we fight is more important than what we fight about. The prop...

Strategies for Sequential Search and Selection in Real Time

This volume contains the proceedings of the MS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Strategies for Sequential Search and Selection in Real Time, held in June 1990 at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The conference focused on problems related to sequential observation of random variables and selection of actions in real time. This book will provide readers with a feeling for the breadth and depth of contemporary research in these areas.
