Improving the Odds

A much-needed counterpoint to the sweeping rhetoric of reform, this important book offers a nuanced depiction of the challenges and possibilities at the school and classroom level. Through the experiences of urban high school teachers who partner with their local university, Del Prete provides unique insight into teaching and learning in the midst of reform. He effectively illustrates why focusing on teaching practice and school cultures—more than standards and accountability—is a more fruitful way to achieve real and lasting change. With powerful portraits from classrooms serving diverse and low-income students, this book: Depicts the daily concerns and small victories of teachers deter...

The year 2015 is being celebrated worldwide as the Centenary of Thomas Merton, who has influenced literally millions of lives. More than 100 international contributors, including well-known celebrities such as Richard Rohr, Parker Palmer, Cynthia Beaugeaut, Thomas Moore, Robert Thurman, Huston Smith, Kallistos Ware, Joan Chittister, James Forest, Matthew Fox, Roger Lipsey, Judith Simmer- Brown, and Seyyed Hossein Nasr honor Merton's centenary by reflecting on the monk and writer's impact on their lives and careers. These highly personal, rather than academic, reflections attest to Merton's continuing importance in the 21st century. Over a quarter of the reflections are by young people which shows that Merton still speaks to a new generation. These profound contributions are deeply thought-provoking, reminding the reader of much he or she has come to understand about life from Merton, and loved about him. This volume is a spiritual treasure, bringing so much full circle: what Merton had to say and how this came to enrich our lives in so many various ways.

Tuning the Rig

Tuning the Rig

To 'tune the rig' describes adjusting a ship's rigging; the rig of a well-tuned boat allows the sails to function well. This task must be performed to ensure the best performance by the ship. Tuning the Rig takes that metaphor as a guide for Catholic educators and administrators, as well as for the larger church. It argues from a variety of perspectives rooted in the Catholic imagination that the rig constantly needs to be re-tuned to balance between visions of the church as teacher and learner. Why should this matter to Catholic educators? To Herron, our understanding of the church as learner is at the heart of our understanding of ourselves as disciples. One of the logical consequences of this era of baptismal consciousness is a rising awareness on the part of the laity that their task is not simply to 'pay, pray, and obey' but to grow and journey in faith. Herron's focus ranges from issues closely pertaining to Catholic schools to the larger questions of the Catholic imagination. The underlying thread, however, is the challenge of maintaining the richness of the Catholic imagination — of tuning the rig — in changing times and the ordinary life of the church.

Failing at School

Roughly half of all incoming ninth graders across urban districts will fail classes and drop out of school without a diploma. Failing at School starts with the premise that urban American high schools generate such widespread student failure not because of some fault of the students who attend them but because high schools were designed to stratify achievement and let only the top performers advance to higher levels of education. This design is particularly detrimental for low-income, racial/ethnic minority students. To get different results, Farrington proposes fundamental changes based on what we now know about how students learn, what motivates them to engage in learning, and what kinds o...

What Should I Do? Confronting Dilemmas of Teaching in Urban Schools

“Have you ever been waiting for THE book? This is that book. Anna Richert has held on to this book for many years because she wanted it to honor the profession and the work of teaching. It satisfies on two important levels—that of those who study teaching and those who do the teaching. At a time when the profession is suffering from a lack of support and criticism on all fronts, Richert elevates it without valorizing it. These are real dilemmas that real teachers struggle with everyday. We owe Anna Richert a big thank you for What Should I Do?” —Gloria Ladson-Billings, Kellner Family Chair in Urban Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison What Should I Do? is a practical guide to t...
