Tom Custer

Few names in American history are as recognizable as George Armstrong Custer. His fame, or infamy, all but overshadows everyone in his circle of family, friends, and enemies. Among those often overlooked is his younger brother, Thomas Ward Custer. In this biography - the first to document the life of Tom Custer - Carl F. Day reveals the public and private life of this notable American soldier. Born in 1845, Tom Custer enlisted in the Union Army in 1861. He saw action in Kentucky and Tennessee before being transferred to his brother George's command in Virginia. At the end of the war he received the Medal of Honor twice - the first man in American history and the only Federal soldier in the Civil War to do so. He went on to participate in the Battle of the Washita, Stanley's Yellowstone Expedition, the Black Hills expedition, and, of course, the final march to the Little Bighorn, where along with his brother George he met his death in 1876. Tom Custer was very much his own man. His private life was not entirely happy. He never married, although he spent his life searching for a suitable female companion. His public service, however, earned him the status of an American hero.

Had Tom Custer not been overshadowed by his more famous brother, he might well have become one of the more notable characters and military officers in the American West. Despite winning two Medals of Honor, his legendary feud with Rain-In-The-Face, the shooting scrape with James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok in Hays City and many other exciting incidents. Tom has taken a back seat to George in the minds of readers and has held but marginal interest for historians -- until Now! Author Roy Bird takes us inside a life-long journey of an impassioned love-hate relationship of two brothers whose intense rivalry in hunting, military skills, business and even romance would span from their boyhood farm to their heroic end at the Little Bighorn, where they were, as always, together. Years of painstaking research has yielded more detail of Tom's life and adventures than ever thought possible while at the same time shining new lights into George's as well. Book jacket.

The Other Custers

Not one, not two, but three Custer brothers died at the Little Bighorn—and so did their only sister's husband. Most do not realize that not one, not two, but three Custer brothers died with the 7th Cavalry at the hands of the Sioux and Cheyenne at Little Bighorn in 1876. So too did their nephew and the husband of their only sister. Less than half the immediate Custer family would survive the massacre. This is their story. This book is a must for all those interested in the enduring Custer legend. Where other Custer literature focuses solely on George Armstrong, The Other Custers is the only volume to explore the lives of the Custer siblings in depth. Around the world people know the name of larger-than-life George Armstrong Custer. Far fewer are aware of his younger sibling, Thomas Ward Custer, who followed the brother he called "Autie" into the Civil War when he was only sixteen. By the age of 17, Tom was a combat veteran and by 20 had distinguished himself in battle as a member of the 6th Michigan Cavalry under Autie's command, and became the first soldier awarded two Medals of Honor. As he was fond of saying, "Autie got the glory but I got the medals " This novel explores Tom's life through the pages of his journal from his early days at home through the end of his life. The story of the brothers Custer, George, Tom, and Boston, reads like a Hollywood thriller - almost too incredible to be true. George Armstrong Custer, known to family and friends as "Autie," graduated last in his class from West Point. What Autie lacked in the classroom he made up for on the battlefields of the Civil War. He rose from a brash second lieutenant to a seasoned brevet lieutenant general and leader of thousands of Union cavalrymen. His heroics at Gettysburg turned the tide of battle for the North and likely saved the Union. Autie's brother, Thomas Ward Custer, or simply "Tom," enlisted in the Union Army as a private. Tom's spectacular deeds of valor earned him a battlefield commission and not one but two Medals of Honor. Autie's youngest brother, Boston, was too young to serve in the Civil War, but he was not too young to join his older brothers in a date with fate on the Little Bighorn. Book jacket.

“The stories contained herein are all of actual happenings and actual participants; here are no fictitious names, no colored circumstances. They are part of the real history of the West, and for that reason I am not ashamed to place this volume in the hands of any interested boy or girl, youth or elderly person, who may desire to know the truth about one of the leading Indian battles, and other important frontier happenings pertaining thereto, and the men who played leading parts therein. Every character mentioned in each chapter was a living, breathing person, and every incident related in this book can be vouched for and verified.” From Troopers with Custer. Although everyone in Custer’s immediate command was killed during the fighting at the Battle of Little Big Horn on June 25-26, 1876, others who participated in the battle survived. Troopers with Custer tells their stories, often in their own words.
