Pediatric Fitness

Over the years, there has been much controversy regarding whether today s children and adolescents are fitter than their peers of the past and whether they are fitter if they live in the more affluent than the less affluent countries. This publication starts by examining data cumulated since the late 1950s on secular trends and geographic variability in pediatric fitness test performances of children and adolescents from 23 countries in North America, Europe, Asia, Australasia, Africa and the Middle East. There is evidence that there has been a global decline in pediatric aerobic performance in recent decades, relative stability in anaerobic performance, and that the best performing children...

NASCAR held its first Strictly Stock race in Charlotte on June 19, 1949, and, in the following decades, dozens of large and small tracks throughout the Carolinas were home to a major NASCAR event. Called Grand National from 1950-1970, NASCAR's top circuit became the Winston Cup in 1971, and most of the dirt and small tracks were subsequently gutted from the schedule. Although a handful of those speedways tenuously held on through exploding popularity, and an influx of big corporate dollars, the transition to metropolitan markets and super speedways was inevitable. Some of the original tracks, like the North Wilkesboro Motor Speedway, still stand testament to the sport's not-too-distant past....

"I cannot begin to count the number of times over the past 37 years that I have wished I had never heard of Vietnam, let alone fought in the Vietnam War. That experience has haunted my days. It has troubled my nights. It has shaped my identity and colored the way I see the world and everything in it"--from the Preface. W.D. Ehrhart, called "one of the great poets and writers of nonfiction produced by the Vietnam War" by The Nation, here presents 43 essays, whose topics include not only the Gulf, Vietnam, and Korean wars, the conflict between Israel and Palestine, war and journalism, and American war poetry, but also junk mail, the Internet, the IRS, tugboats, drawbridges, race relations, the justice system, health care, small town life in America, nicotine addiction, the bravado of youth, honesty and American culture, the rhetoric of national mythology, and presidential isolation, among others.

Children and Childhoods 2

Decisions relating to children's lives, including formation of policies about children and young people, advocating for children's rights, educational instruction and parenting, all depend on images of children and childhoods. Nonetheless, prevailing images of childhood are not often subject to critique. Images of Childhood offers an examination of public images of childhood in the context of research findings. Authors from a wide range of disciplines, including early childhood, psychology ...

The End of the Obesity Epidemic

Despite apocalyptic predictions from a vocal alliance of health professionals, politicians and social commentators that rising obesity levels would lead to a global health crisis, the crisis has not materialised. In this provocative follow up to his classic work of obesity scepticism, The Obesity Epidemic, Michael Gard argues that we have entered into a new, and perhaps terminal, phase of the obesity debate. Evidence suggests that obesity rates are levelling off in Western societies, life expectancies continue to rise in line with rising obesity rates, and across the world policy-makers have remained largely indifferent and inactive in the face of this apparently deadly threat to our health ...

Body Composition Assessment in Children and Adolescents

During growth and development of children, body composition, predominantly fat and lean body mass, plays a central role. The body composition parameters are important determinants of child health, also in regard to obesity. This volume is a collection of articles presenting a broad scope of body composition experiments ranging from simple anthropometry to the technologically advanced technique of magnetic resistance imaging (MRI). It is an exceptional source of information on anthropometric measurements, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and other methods of body composition analysis in children. Beyond that the numerous considerations influencing the acceptability of the apparently simple BIA method in children are discussed in several contributions. Stimulating and up to date, this book is a distincitive reference for pediatricians, nutritionists, anthropologists, exercise and sport scientists as well as sport medicine specialists.

How does God respond to trauma in a world full of horrors? Beyond their physical and emotional toll, the horrors of this world raise difficult theological and existential questions. Where is God in the darkest moments of the human experience? Is there any hope for recovery from the trauma generated by these horrors? There are no easy answers to these questions. In God of All Comfort, Scott Harrower addresses these questions head on. Using the Gospel of Matthew as a backdrop, he argues for a Trinitarian approach to horrors, showing how God--in his triune nature--reveals himself to those who have experienced trauma. He explores the many ways God relates restoratively with humanity, showing how God's light shines through the darkness of trauma.
