The Last Voyage of the Shelduck

The Last Voyage of the Shelduck is an intriguing book that details the ongoing mystery of the Shelduck – a seagoing leisure cruiser – which is bought out of dilapidated retirement to enter Dutch waters. The object of contention is a valuable Leiberman painting, which ultimately leads to the coup de grâce in a gripping finale. The story bides its time in pursuit of retribution and is full of character sketches. This novel perceptively portrays real people who engage with witty dialogue in an unfolding conspiracy. The author Tim Parker is not only a shrewd observer of human behaviour, but he also combines an elegant command of words with an economy of explanation borne from his years as a columnist for the daily Brighton Argus. An ideal read for a book club, The Last Voyage of the Shelduck is an amusing book that is littered with quirky elements that never ceases to be entertaining, providing the opportunity for endless discussion by all who read it.

Signalman Jones

In 1939, young English naval signalman Geoffrey Holder-Jones began his career by surviving a German mine attack in the Thames estuary. World War II took him as naval officer to Iceland, the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, and the United States. Commissioned as a naval officer and given command of his own ship, Jones then patrolled the waters off Canada and Newfoundland before returning to Britain in 1944. This true story, written on the basis of personal conversations and a scrapbook entrusted to the author 60 years after the war, illuminates one of the great achievements of the war the beating of the German U-boat blockade of the American coast by squadrons of Allied ships that were little more than motley collections of armed trawlers and whalers. With a sense of humor and decency that sustained him through the ordeals of convoy duty in the Arctic Ocean, Signalman Jones has related his story to Tim Parker with vivid observations and an eye for the absurd.

Touch Down

Touchdown of Apollo 11 had many unknowns for the first lunar landing. Dodging the craters and boulders on the moon to land on a firm surface without totally running out of fuel for the return to Earth was a breathtaking experience. The author recounts his press briefing to the world's journalists prior to the 1969 launch at Cape Kennedy, followed by how he became an aerospace engineer. Building a suit to protect the astronauts from the unknowns encountered in the extremes of space and on the lunar surface was an ongoing challenge. Details such as the effects of cosmic rays, thermal extremes and micro-meteoroids on the human body were addressed as they were discovered over the eight-year period following JFK's challenge. Key engineering changes to meet the new requirements for the space suit that had to be tested and implemented before each mission are described. Applications of the new technologies, materials and processes developed in the space programs adapted to industrial and consumer products are also delineated.

Regimental Piano

Born in 1918 Major Bob Orrell grew up in the Lancashire town of Tottington. His army career was briefly deferred so he could complete his civil engineering exams but he was drafted into the Royal Engineers in July 1940 and was soon at the heart of the war as Britain battled across Europe into Germany accompanied by the regimental piano of the title. Bob gave brave and active service, and was mentioned in dispatches for his courage and quick thinking when he and just two colleagues managed to capture a bunker and its 53 inmates on Sword Beach during the D-Day landings in June 1944. These actions belied Bob s peaceful nature and on leaving the army he and his wife, Nancy became active campaign...
