La storia di Atlantide ebbe inizio con due dia-loghi scritti da Platone, intorno al 360 a.C, il Timeo e il Crizia, Attraverso i personaggi di Socrate, Ermo-crate, Timeo di Locri e Crizia, suo antenato e capo dei Trenta Tiranni di Atene, il filosofo raccontò di Atlantide, un’isola-continente “più grande della Libia e dell’A-sia”, all’epoca il Nord Africa e l’Anatolia, che si trovava nell’Oceano Atlantico e al di là delle Co-lonne d’Ercole. Già nell'antichità classica si narrava d'una gran-de isola Atlantide, più grande dell'Asia e della Libia prese insieme, situata innanzi alle colonne d'Ercole. L'abitava un popolo forte e guerriero, che una volta era mosso all'invasione dell'Europa e dell'A-sia, ma era stato ricacciato dai Greci comandati dagli Ateniesi, finché, poi, si era inabissato nel mare con tutta l'isola.
