Advanced Information Systems Engineering Workshops
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of five international workshops held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in conjunction with the 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering, CAiSE 2016, in June 2016. The 16 full and 9 short papers were carefully selected from 51 submissions. The associated workshops were the Third International Workshop on Advances in Services DEsign based on the Notion of CApabiliy (ASDENCA) co-arranged with the First International Workshop on Business Model Dynamics and Information Systems Engineering (BumDISE), the Fourth International Workshop on Cognitive Aspects of Information Systems Engineering (COGNISE), the First International Workshop on Energy-awareness and Big Data Management in Information Systems (EnBIS), the Second International Workshop on Enterprise Modeling (EM), and the Sixth International Workshop on Information Systems Security Engineering (WISSE).
Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty
Looking at the life and legacy of Emperor Yang (569–618) of the brief Sui dynasty in a new light, this book presents a compelling case for his importance to Chinese history. Author Victor Cunrui Xiong utilizes traditional scholarship and secondary literature from China, Japan, and the West to go beyond the common perception of Emperor Yang as merely a profligate tyrant. Xiong accepts neither the traditional verdict against Emperor Yang nor the apologist effort to revise it, and instead offers a reassessment of Emperor Yang by exploring the larger political, economic, military, religious, and diplomatic contexts of Sui society. This reconstruction of the life of Emperor Yang reveals an astute visionary with literary, administrative, and reformist accomplishments. While a series of strategic blunders resulting from the darker side of his personality led to the collapse of the socioeconomic order and to his own death, the Sui legacy that Emperor Yang left behind lived on to provide the foundation for the rise of the Tang dynasty, the pinnacle of medieval Chinese civilization.

Iron and Steel in Ancient China
This book is a study of the production and use of iron and steel in China up to the second century B.C., and simultaneously a methodological study of the reconciliation of archaeological and written sources in Chinese cultural history. An introductory chapter describes and discusses the available sources and their use, gives a brief outline of early Chinese archaeology and history, and develops certain important themes, especially the interaction of North and South in early China. Further chapters consider the invention of iron in a barbarian culture of southeast China, its spread to the area of Chinese culture, and the development of a large-scale iron industry in the third century B.C.
