Amarillo's Historic Wolflin District

In September 1887, J. T. Berry bought 640 acres of school land from the State of Texas. Several years earlier, this raw section of prairie had been home to buffalo herds and the Kiowa and Comanche Nations. Berry could not have known that this land would one day become home to cattle barons, oil and gas pioneers, and a U.S. ambassador. When Charles Oldham Wolflin married Alpha Eunice McVean a decade later and acquired that same section of land, he never dreamed that his son would develop that land from a dairy farm into a premier residential development. Today the Wolflin Historic District is a vibrant, lush neighborhood with tree-lined brick streets and stately houses. It is home to several thousand residents, including descendants of pioneer families, modern-day professionals, and public servants who contribute to the arts, are involved in philanthropy, and are active in community service.

Examining the applied media ethics question of professional persuasion, this special double issue resulted from a colloquium and conference on allowable ethical limits of deception in professional persuasion. Participants were invited to reason their way toward a threshold that would define acceptable deception for a professional persuader in pursuit of favorable market and public opinion conditions for a client. As a whole, this issue covers a broad range of views and expressions of opinion that often come close to defining the threshold between morally acceptable and morally outrageous persuasion.

Persuasion Ethics Today explores persuasive communication in the fields of advertising, promotions, public relations and integrated marketing communication, and is designed for course use in advertising curricula. Ethical questions have become increasingly important in today’s media landscape, and issues of regulation, privacy, and convenience are the subjects of heated debate among consumers, industry professional, policy makers, and interest groups. With the explosion of social media, mobile devices, tracking technologies, and behavioral targeting, the ethical issues about persuasion continue to increase in importance. This book’s goal is to offer a broad introduction to the ethical standards, challenges, understanding, and decision-making strategies involved in the practice of persuasion. Persuasion Ethics Today links real world persuasive communication activities to fundamental philosophies of ethics. It also offers tools for students and practitioners to engage with ethical dilemmas in a systematic way, and jumpstart debates about the right ethical choices in an increasingly complex media and social environment.

Newsworthy

In this book, Ed Madison, journalist, producer/director, and innovative educator, provides specific strategies to help teachers use journalistic learning to achieve positive outcomes that engage students in new ways. Journalistic learning is a teaching approach that borrows techniques from the journalism profession to better instruct students in research, reading, and writing in language arts and social sciences classes. Drawing from extensive fieldwork in schools across the US, Madison demonstrates how this approach is uniquely aligned with Common Core State Standards that call for more emphasis on nonfiction texts and digital literacy skills. Centered on research and writing projects that will yield publishable student writing, chapters demonstrate how this approach works across contexts and benefits a broad range of students from diverse backgrounds. The text also explores new and affordable approaches to teacher training.
