This book tells the tale of a boy growing up in a small town in Massachusetts, during the 1950s and 60s. What makes the story unique is the manner in which the boy was raised. While most households, during that time, consisted of a mother, father, and some number of children, Tommy had none of that. Although, he did have a mother, she was only present on a part-time basis, and his father had died during World War II. Solely for his mother's convenience, he was raised, for the most part, on a farm in Sudbury. This situation, being of room and board, lasted from 1947 until 1964. Along the way, he learned many lessons, abandonment being the strongest. Will Tommy ever be able to dig his way out of the depths of depression, and learn how to truly love and care? Time will tell.
