Making Accountability Work

Like honesty and clean water, "accountability" is invariably seen as a good thing. Conversely, the absence of accountability is associated with most of the greatest abuses in human history. Accountability is thus closely linked with the exercise of power and the legitimacy of policies and those pursuing them. This book looks at the role of evaluation and of audit as key elements in democratic accountability processes. The contributors explore the apparent paradox of there being more accountability-related activities today than ever before, at the same time as much public debate laments what is seen as a lack of actual accountability. Such a situation raises a number of questions: Is there a ...

7 Acts of Entitlement

Emma Harris is a highly remunerated young corporate executive who appears to have everything and everyone, right where she wants them. She is brash, bullying, and not afraid to use her good looks or voracious sexual appetite to win over men or women. She is also an entitled rogue who, behind closed doors, deals in drugs to get what she wants and to cover her inadequacies. Emma is dominating everyone at work for the next promotion and a massive bonus payment until her much older co-worker, Ben Young, starts to sense everything is not what it seems. Ben may be from a different generation, but he too can be devious, and he sets out on a mission to expose the truth and to fuck Emma over. As their pathways collide, it becomes clear that using sex, drugs and cunning to get the gratification they desire is not so different between generations after all.

Honoured in Places

Ever since the Canadian prairies were first settled and the Mounties marched west to establish and maintain law and order, the names of individual officers have left their mark on the national landscape. Their long tradition has been honoured in many of the place names of Canada, especially in the West. In this collection, over 250 of the NWMP, RNWMP and RCMP members who died while on duty, or who enjoyed long or extraordinary careers, are remembered. Other place names are connected to a Mountie-related event or were named by a pioneering Mountie in honour of some significant occurrence. Authors William "Bill" Hulgaard and John "Jack" White, both retired Mounties, extended their research across Canada to compile the information for Honoured in Places.

Inspired by Raymond Williams’ cultural materialism, H.F. Pimlott explores the connections between political practice and cultural form through Marxism Today’s transformation from a Communist Party theoretical journal into a ‘glossy’ left magazine. Marxism Today’s successes and failures during the 1980s are analysed through its political and cultural critiques of Thatcherism and the left, especially by Stuart Hall and Eric Hobsbawm, innovative publicity and marketplace distribution, relationships with the national UK press, cultural coverage, design and format, and writing style. Wars of Position offers insights for contemporary media activists and challenges the neglect of the left press by media scholars.

The world can be better run. Democracy is the most effective way to take back control over decisions that impact people’s lives. But democracy must evolve following a global technological revolution that has increased fears that global trade and immigration threaten our identity, that we face environmental ruin and that cybercriminals and 'big tech' can do as they please, unchecked – all made worse by COVID-19. This book presents a roadmap for more accountable democracy locally, nationally and internationally. Marcial Bragadini Bóo proposes updating rules so that politicians are better held to account, public services improve and people can contribute to their communities. New rules of democracy may help find solutions to global problems and ensure everyone is fairly represented at the decision-making table.
