Huvudpersonen är en trettiosexårig porträttmålare som bor i Tokyo. Efter att hans hustru plötsligt en dag låtit meddela att hon vill skiljas avbokar han allt och reser sin väg. Han hamnar i ett avskilt hus högt uppe på ett berg och bestämmer sig för att framöver måla landskap istället för porträtt. På vinden i det märkliga huset påträffar han av en händelse en målning med titeln "Mordet på kommendören". Motivet tycks vara ett brutalt mord på 500-talet men anspelar samtidigt på Mozarts berömda opera Don Giovanni som skrevs först i slutet av 1700-talet. Inte långt därefter hör en gåtfull IT-miljardär av sig och vill beställa ett porträtt. Haruki Murakamis nya roman i två delar, Mordet på kommendören, handlar om den gäckande konsten och flyende tiden. Platsen är lika mycket ett stilla japanskt landskap i nutid som förintelsen och Nanjingmassakern i Kina 1937. Boken är Murakamis mest ambitiösa roman sedan trilogin 1Q84 (2011) och vållade stor debatt i hemlandet för det sätt på vilket den grep sig an politiskt känsliga ämnen. Den andra och avslutande delen kommer på svenska i början av 2019.
