An Introduction to Eco-ethica
The impact of science and technology on human life has given rise to a technology-mediated environment alongside our natural environment, presenting new issues concerning bioethics, environmental ethics, and the way in which technology is turning human beings into 'skilled animals.' The new field of eco-ethica explores issues arising from this changed habitat and our changing moral consciousness and presents an ethics that transcends interpersonal ethics so as to also encompass companies and governments. The author advocates learning from nature and argues that the human race has an ethical responsibility toward nature and things, including life itself. By demonstrating that virtues were created as necessary in the past, he raises the possibility of creating new virtues to meet contemporary needs. With a firm grasp of Western philosophy and ethics, the author adds a new dimension by contributing a Japanese perspective.
Ethics and Politics
The main theme of volume 4 of Eco-ethica is Ethics and Politics. In the first and second part, the authors examine the sometimes conflictual relationship between ethics and politics from an eco-ethical perspective. They investigate how our conceptions of both ethics and politics have been shaped historically as well as by today's technological conjuncture. The third part continues the discussion of French philosopher Paul Ricoeur (1913 - 2005) begun in volume 3. The essays here focus on how his conception of the connections and differences between ethics and politics led him to embrace certain paradoxes in politics and forced him to become suspicious of apolitical thinking.
Ethics and Justice. Éthique et justice
The main theme of volume 6 of Eco-ethica is "Ethics and Justice" which focuses on the idea of "justice" in a metaphysical, social, and personal sense. Justice is considered as a balance between opposite ambitions in interdependent persons, and as equity in legislation, but not as blind justice. Today it is valuable not only on the national, but also on the cosmopolitan level. Before it became personal justice, the idea of justice was considered metaphysical and social, both in European and Chinese culture. However, in modern times, it is often reduced to a moral duty without meta-ethical responsibility. This book offers a serious take on the social-environmental crisis that our world suffers from today. In the first section the authors look at ethical responsibility in relation to the natural environment, whereas in the second section they examine ethical responsibility in the cultural and social environment. The third part includes papers devoted to the philosophy of Paul Ric (1913-2005), written by Ric scholars.
