Designing Identity

Rome and the Classic Maya
This volume compares two of the most famous cases of civilizational collapse, that of the Roman Empire and the Classic Maya world. First examining the concept of collapse, and how it has been utilized in the historical, archaeological and anthropological study of past complex societies, Storey and Storey draw on extensive archaeological evidence to consider the ultimate failure of the institutions, infrastructure and material culture of both of these complex cultures. Detailing the relevant economic, political, social and environmental factors behind these notable falls, Rome and the Classic Maya contends that a phenomenon of “slow collapse” has repeatedly occurred in the course of human history: complex civilizations are shown to eventually come to an end and give way to new cultures. Ravenna and the Traditions of Late Antique and Early Byzantine Craftsmanship
In the last twenty years scholarship on late antique and early medieval Ravenna has resulted in a certain number of publications mainly focused on the fields of architecture, mosaics and archaeology. On the contrary, much less attention has been paid on labour – both manual and intellectual – as well as the structure of production and objects derived from manufacturing activities, despite the fact that Ravenna is the place which preserves the highest number of historical evidence among all centres of the late Roman Mediterranean. Its cultural heritage is vast and composite, ranging from papyri to inscriptions, from ivories to marbles, as well as luxury objects, pottery, and coins. Starting from concrete typologies of hand-manufactured goods existing in the Ravennate milieu, the book aims at exploring the multifaceted traditions of late antique and early Byzantine handicraft from the fourth to the eighth century AD. Its perspective is to pay attention more on patronage, social taste, acculturation, workers and the economic industry of production which supported the demand, circulation and distribution of artefacts, than on the artistic evaluation of the objects themselves.

The 17th congress of the Association Internationale pour l'Histoire du Verre (AIHV), held in Antwerp, Belgium from 4 to 8 September 2006, brought together scholars from all over the world specialized in the history of glass. AIHV is an international organisation whose membership spans the globe, from Los Angeles to Tokyo and from Helsinki to Adelaide. Since its creation 50 years ago, AIHV members have studied and reported on the extraordinary development of glass in all historical periods in the Annales of the AIHV. Next to containing numerous contributions on the use, manufacture and trade of glass in the Antique period, also the importance of glass in more recent historical periods, starting from the 15th century and ending in the 21st century, are dealt with in detail.
