Ghana has faced strong gender bias inside its educational institutions since gaining independence from Britain. This prejudice is fuelled by the legacy of the colonial powers, nurtured by Ghana's traditional anti-female beliefs, and made worse by various social crises and irresponsible politicians. These factors combine to limit girls' educational experiences, keeping females in complete submission to males. Many of the studies done on girls' education have focused on comparing the student population of girls and boys, but this book looks at the role played by societal belief systems and socio-educational and economic crises impacting girls' schooling. The author tells about the problems Ghanaian girls face through her own memories as a child and as a teacher in Ghanaian school. This book uses case studies of four girls who dropped out of school and their families and teachers to further the understanding of gender issues faced by Ghana in particular and educational systems in general.

The contributors go beyond the previously articulated 'bringing the state back in' model to offer their own 'state-in-society' approach. They argue that states, which should be disaggregated for meaningful comparative study, are best analysed as parts of societies. States may help mould, but are also continually moulded by, the societies within which they are embedded. States' capacities, further, will vary depending on their ties to other social forces. And other social forces will be capable of being mobilised into political contention only under certain conditions. Political contention pitting states against other social forces may sometimes be mutually enfeebling, but at other times, mutually empowering.
The Nordic countries are currently facing major challenges with regard to maintaining and further developing social welfare. Against this background, the Nordic Council of Ministers decided in autumn 2013 to appoint a working group to map initiatives to support social entrepreneurship and social innovation in the Nordic countries. The main purpose of this mapping is to increase knowledge of initiatives to support social entrepreneurship and social innovation in the Nordic Region in the work to include disadvantaged groups in employment and society. This report presents the results from the mapping and the working group's recommendations for further follow-up.

This report is the result of an international conference organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden (the Department for Migration and Asylum Policy and the International Development of Co-operation Department). The conference took place on 6-7 September 1999 at Foresta Hotel in Stockholm. Participants came from almost all EU member states, from most of the EU candidate countries and from other countries in Europe and further afield. The keyword for the Stockholm conference was "a comprehensive approach". Such an approach integrates foreign and economic policy measures with asylum and migration policy.
