The field of cytokine research is expanding at a rapid pace Contributions from the major leading groups in the world on the structure and biological properties of cytokine and cytokine receptors, as well as integrated reviews on cytokines in various physiological and pathological conditions were presented in three issues of International Reviews of Immunology This collection of articles provided a unique source of information However, important discoveries are emerging very rapidly and some of the reviews written in 1997 are already outdated In this book, the editors assemble reviews that have been updated by their authors to include all the recent publications and unpublished data from the authors' laboratories This volume should serve as an excellent reference source for all those concerned by the multiple faces of cytokines in basic research and in the clinic

Human CD38 and Related Molecules

In recent years, CD38 has emerged from a simple differentiation marker to a multifunctional cell surface protein. It can serve as an ectoenzyme that catalyzes the synthesis and hydrolysis of a Ca2+mobilizing agent, cyclic ADP-ribose. Since intracellular calcium plays a key role in cell signaling pathways leading to cell growth, apoptosis, and differentiation, the enzymatic functions of CD38 may contribute to an array of immunoregulatory functions. Ligation of CD38 with agonistic antibodies induces diverse effects in hematopoietic cells which range from growth stimulation to induction and prevention of apoptosis, induction of cytokines, and activation of certain kinases. Based on these observ...

Drug Discovery in Japan

This book analyzes the drug-discovery process in Japan, based on detailed case studies of 12 groups of 15 innovative drugs. It covers the first statin in the world up to the recent major breakthrough in cancer therapy, the recent immune checkpoint inhibitor, the scientific discovery for which a 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Prof. Tasuku Honjo, Kyoto University. The book shows the pervasive high uncertainty in drug discovery: frequent occurrences of unexpected difficulties, discontinuations, serendipities, and good luck, significantly because drug discovery starts when the underlying science is incomplete. Thus, there exist dynamic interactions between scientific p...

A Living History of Immunology

In the highly competitive world of biomedical science, often the rush to publish and to be recognized as "first" with a new discovery, concept or method, is lost in the hurly-burly of the moment, as "the maddening crowd" moves on to the next "new thing". One of the great things about immunology today is that it has only become mature as a science within the last half-century, and especially within the past 35 years as a consequence of the revolution of molecular immunology, which has taken place only since 1980. Consequently, most of those who have contributed to our new understanding of how the immune system functions are still alive and well, and still contributing. Thus, "A Living History...
