This book contains a collection of papers covering recent progress in a number of areas of singularity theory. Topics include blow analyticity, recent progress in the research on equivalence relations of maps and functions, sufficiency of jets, and the transversality theorem. . Geometric and analytic studies of partial differential equations have been developed independently of one another, but the shock wave solutions appearing in natural phenomena are not well understood. Singularity theory may unify these studies and a survey based on this viewpoint is presented in which a new notion of weak solution is introduced. Splitting Deformations of Degenerations of Complex Curves

The author develops a deformation theory for degenerations of complex curves; specifically, he treats deformations which induce splittings of the singular fiber of a degeneration. He constructs a deformation of the degeneration in such a way that a subdivisor is "barked" (peeled) off from the singular fiber. These "barking deformations" are related to deformations of surface singularities (in particular, cyclic quotient singularities) as well as the mapping class groups of Riemann surfaces (complex curves) via monodromies. Important applications, such as the classification of atomic degenerations, are also explained.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications Participating Institutions Conference on Singularities, held at the University of Iowa in July 1986. The conference brought together an international group of researchers in algebraic and analytic singularity theory. This collection consists of research papers related to talks given at the conference. The field of singularities takes techniques from and gives results to many areas of mathematics, including algebraic and differential geometry and topology, complex analysis, Lie algebras and reflection groups, and combinatorics. Cohomology of Vector Bundles and Syzygies

The central theme of this book is an exposition of the geometric technique of calculating syzygies. It is written from a point of view of commutative algebra, and without assuming any knowledge of representation theory the calculation of syzygies of determinantal varieties is explained. The starting point is a definition of Schur functors, and these are discussed from both an algebraic and geometric point of view. Then a chapter on various versions of Bott's Theorem leads on to a careful explanation of the technique itself, based on a description of the direct image of a Koszul complex. Applications to determinantal varieties follow, plus there are also chapters on applications of the technique to rank varieties for symmetric and skew symmetric tensors of arbitrary degree, closures of conjugacy classes of nilpotent matrices, discriminants and resultants. Numerous exercises are included to give the reader insight into how to apply this important method.

This volume is a collection of papers presented at the XIII International Workshop on Real and Complex Singularities, held from July 27–August 8, 2014, in São Carlos, Brazil, in honor of María del Carmen Romero Fuster's 60th birthday.
