Celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Venetian Heritage--whose mission is to safeguard Venetian cultural legacy as manifested in architecture, music, and fine art--this stunning volume highlights the organization's work in restoring, preserving, and promoting the cultural heritage of Venice. This book showcases the most impressive restoration projects of the last twenty years, from the eighteenth-century façade of the Church of Jesuits and early-Renaissance façade of the Church of San Zaccaria in Venice, to the Chapel of the Blessed Giovanni Orsini and the Romanesque portal of the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence in Croatia. Beautifully photographed in breathtaking detail, this volume tells the story of the crucial role that Venetian Heritage has in preserving the art of Venice both in Italy and in the areas once part of the Republic of Venice.

Inside Venice

The superb private interiors of Venice are revealed in this lavishly photographed book. This gorgeously photographed journey through entrancingly beautiful Venetian interiors is sure to appeal to Venice’s many admirers interested in the elegance and refinement of classical Old World interior design. The private properties featured in this handsome volume are not accessible to the public and most are published here for the first time. The book is a luxurious presentation of the hidden architectural and interior design treasures of Venice, ranging from historical ninth-century buildings to contemporary renovations that blend old and new. Seventy-two properties, each photographed exclusively for the book, are profiled—mainly private apartments and palazzos, along with some churches, hotels, and other public spaces that those interested in interiors will find inspiring. Author and preservation expert Toto Bergamo Rossi personally selected each property for inclusion based on his detailed field knowledge gained over many years as director of the Venetian Heritage Foundation, whose mission is to safeguard Venetian cultural heritage as manifested in architecture, music, and fine art.

This lavishly illustrated book offers a detailed look at the evolution of Helen Frankenthaler's sumptuous evocations of the natural world in paintings spanning forty years. Famous as the inventor of the "soak-stain" technique that ushered in Color Field painting in the mid-twentieth century, Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) continued to create powerful, original abstractions throughout her lifetime. This volume focuses on a selection of paintings that reveal the relationship between the pittura and the panorama in her work over the course of four decades. As Frankenthaler scholar John Elderfield notes, this interplay between works that are reminiscent of easel paintings, though made on the fl...

The Gardens of Venice and the Veneto

The Gardens of Venice and the Veneto takes in a varied selection of gardens old and new, large and small, public and private. It ranges from tiny monastery gardens tucked away within the walls of Venice to grand palatial landscapes in the former marshes of the hinterland. The book is divided into five sections as well as a lively introduction which captures the rich history of this region. The first section will show the extraordinary gardens still to be found locked behind high walls in the city itself. Then Jenny Condie and Alex Ramsay wander through the more modest parts of the city where ordinary Venetians manage to grow flowers, fruit and vegetables in the most unlikely spots. Then it is out into the lagoon and wild gardens on marshy islands before turning inland to the grand Palladian villas and the Baroque splendours of villas like the Villa Barbarigo and the Villa Allegri Arvedi among many fine country residences of ancient families. All the gardens in the book can be reached within a day's expedition from Venice and practical information about access and advice on the best time of year to visit is included for all those open to the public.

100 Churches of Venice and the Lagoon

An in-depth guide to Venetian culture and history through its houses of worship Begun in 2014 by Ecuadorian-born, New York-based photographer Alejandro Merizalde (born 1979), 100 Churches of Venice and the Lagoon documents religious temples from every sestiere of Venice and the smaller towns of the Venetian lagoon. What began as a small challenge of photographing just the Grand Canal's churches quickly grew in scope to include every neighborhood in the city. From Murano to Burano and Torcello, from Pellestrina to Chioggia, and deep into the northern lagoon to areas such as Lio Piccolo and Treporti, Merizalde photographed their respective churches whether they remained in service or were deconsecrated or repurposed. The layout of these images emphasizes the facade, relying on subtle repetitions for aesthetic continuity and balance. An essay by Marina Gasparini Lagrange combines her experience living in Venice with a poignant historical perspective.
