Genomic Adaptation for Organohalide Respiration of Vinyl Chloride and Other Priority Pollutants by the Anaerobic Bacterium Dehalococcoides

Vinyl chloride (VC) is a widespread groundwater pollutant and Group 1 carcinogen. Microbial respiration of VC is both critical for complete remediation of chloroethenes in situ, and a unique physiology only observed by certain strains of Dehalococcoides. Two different genes independently encoding VC respiration in Dehalococcoides, vcrA and bvcA, were identified previously, each a member of the diverse family of reductive dehalogenase homologous genes, or rdhA. In this thesis I report that vcrA and bvcA are among a subset of putative 'foreign' rdhA with a low GC3 codon usage that favors the nucleotide T, even though tRNAs recognizing T-ending codons are categorically absent in Dehalococcoides...

Neurotoxic Factors in Parkinson’s Disease and Related Disorders

This book stems from the 2nd Parkinson's Disease Symposium on Neurotoxic Factors in Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders, held on Augus 6-7, 1999 at the University of Ulm Medical School in Ulm at the Danube in Germany. The specific topic, neurotoxic factors in Parkinson's Disease, involves neurobiological, epidemiological and environmental factors that bring to light this second most common neurodegenerative disorder. This work is compiled by leading researchers in neurodegeneration from around the world, making it a unique, comprehensive, and useful publication.

Enantioselective Synthesis of Beta-Amino Acids

Covers all facets of the synthesis of ß-amino acids As evidenced by an exponential increase in the literature published on the subject, interest in ß-amino acids has grown over the past several years. With major pharmaceutical applications, these amino acids are now studied across multiple lines of research, including combinatorial chemistry, medicinal chemistry, molecular design, proteomics, and others. This Second Edition of Enantioselective Synthesis of ß-Amino Acids updates reviews included in the First Edition while also covering new developments since its publication. The book presents detailed discussions of the most important methods for the synthesis of ß-amino acids. In most ca...

During the past 20 years, transgenesis has become a popular technique and a crucial tool for molecular geneticists and biologists. Transgene expression is now better-controlled and even specifically inducible by exogenous factors. While these techniques have quite significantly transformed the experimental approaches taken by biologists, the applications are more limited than expected and concerns have arisen regarding biosafety as well as physiological, social, and philosophical issues. Transgenic Animals: Generation and Use contains articles on the techniques used to generate transgenic animals and a section on the preparation of vectors for the optimally controlled expression of transgene...

Capitalism v. Democracy

  • Categories: Law

As of the latest national elections, it costs approximately $1 billion to become president, $10 million to become a Senator, and $1 million to become a Member of the House. High-priced campaigns, an elite class of donors and spenders, superPACs, and increasing corporate political power have become the new normal in American politics. In Capitalism v. Democracy, Timothy Kuhner explains how these conditions have corrupted American democracy, turning it into a system of rule that favors the wealthy and marginalizes ordinary citizens. Kuhner maintains that these conditions have corrupted capitalism as well, routing economic competition through political channels and allowing politically powerful...

Stephen K. Medvic’s Campaigns and Elections addresses two distinct but related aspects of American electoral democracy—both the processes that constitute campaigns and elections and the players who are involved. In addition to this balanced coverage on process and actors, it also gives equal billing to both campaigns and elections, and to contests for both legislative and executive positions at the national and state and local level. The book starts by providing students with the conceptual distinctions between what happens in an election and the campaigning that proceeds it. Significant attention is devoted to setting up the context for these campaigns and elections by covering the rules of the game in the American electoral system as well as aspects of election administration and the funding of elections. Then the book systematically covers the actors at every level—candidates and their organizations, parties, interest groups, the media, and voters—and the macro level aspects of campaigns such as campaign strategy and determinants of election outcomes. The book concludes with a big picture assessment of campaign ethics and implications of the "permanent campaign".
