Alaska was calling! LaVerne's dream was to follow in Robert Service's footsteps to the wilds of Alaska. At sixteen she was already writing her own music and she believed that her talent could only flourish on the back trails of the Yukon. Alone and impersonating a boy, she hires aboard a freighter, out of Seattle, and works her way to the north. From boat rides on the Yukon and encounters with native tribes to filing homestead papers and working the land, LaVerne uses newfound frontier wisdom as a basis for expanding both her music and her perceptions: "No man owns what Mother Spirit does not freely give." Black-eyed Joe told her. What a charming folk tale, LaVerne thought. I could use the story in one of my songs." It was here she learns the realities of frontier life that will shape her life, help her create music, and lead her in directions no woman has explored alone before.
Alma, Kitty and Hattie have one thing in common. The men that they love and married are in prison. Wives visit their men behind bars every day and wonder how their lives brought them to this place. This story focuses on three of these women. Alma is an exotic dancer who seems, at first glance, to be a bit of a nitwit. But on closer inspection she has a street-smart wisdom and humor. Hattie is a hard working African American with four children who is trying to keep her family together. Then there is Kitty, a wealthy socialite, who in spite of the shame and embarrassment of visiting a prison where her husband refuses to see her, doggedly visits every other week. Author, playwright, and poet, Trisha Sugarek has been writing for four decades. Until recently her writing had focused on stage plays (Publisher: Samuel French, Inc.) that ranged from prison stories to children's fables. She has expanded her body of work to include two books of poetry, a group of children's books and her debut novel, "Women Outside the Walls". Newly released, a series "ShortN'Small" short plays, small casts which are used in classrooms in this country and internationally. She has enjoyed a thirty year career in theatre as an actor and director. Originally from Seattle, she has worked in theatres from coast to coast and her plays have been produced across the country and abroad. Rainey, the unicorn, is a prince who has been banished, for centuries, by the warlord, Hazard. He can never return home unless Emma solves more riddles than Kodak, Hazard's Lieutenant and discovers his secret weakness. The fable ends with a surprise twist which will delight readers. While written for children, this fairy tale is sophisticated enough to appeal to adults as well. Queens, warlocks, faeries, elves, unicorns, handmaidens, scary henchmen and one small mortal girl child, in an enchanted forest. The rhetorical owl and naughty elf provide much laughter. This parable offers many subtle lessons.
