This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the use of antibiotics in the urological setting. It is the first work to focus exclusively on the treatment of urinary tract infections, starting from the recent epidemiological and microbiological acquisitions in terms of bacterial resistance. The structure of the book reflects everyday clinical practice, and the sections are divided in line with the level of clinical severity, starting from the uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections and continuing to severe uro-sepsis. Particular emphasis has been given to patient-related risk factors, to the role of antibiotic prophylaxis in urological surgical procedures, and to the treatment of male associated gland infections. The final section offers a dedicated tool for easy and rapid consultation, helping physicians in the everyday clinical practice setting. The book offers the first practical guide for physicians who treat patients affectedby urological infections. Further, it offers a simple guide to consulting for all physicians who occasionally care for these patients.

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are one of the most frequently occurring infections, not only community acquired, but also hospital acquired infections. An increase of resistant uropathogens against commonly used antibiotics can be observed worldwide, a subject of great concern.Several strategies are discussed how to cope with this problem:i) not to use antibiotics, when not indicated, e.g. asymptomatic bacteriuria, or when non-antimicrobial measures are available, e.g. for prophylaxis of recurrent UTI;ii) to prefer even old antibiotics, which still have preserved their antibacterial activity against uropathogens;iii) if broad spectrum antibiotics are needed for empiric therapy of severe infections, to use the right and high enough dosages to reduce selection of resistant pathogens, and to step down to a more tailored antibiotic therapy as soon as possible;iv) to control and try to avoid health care associated UTI by optimal hygienic and interventional strategies; and last but not leastv) to stimulate development of new antibiotics, especially when new bacterial targets can be approached.

Special consideration is also given to contemporary aspects of prostatitis management relating to antibiotic stewardship and elevated PSA, bearing in mind that thoughtless treatment of prostatitis represents malpractice and sometimes even a forensic issue. The final chapter comprising questions and answers will be valuable for quick consultation in everyday clinical practice. This book will be a truly practical guide for physicians involved in the diagnostic work-up and treatment of patients suspected of having prostatitis and will also serve as a ready source of information for all physicians who occasionally see prostatitis patients.

Among the diseases that cause functional disorders are spina bifida, spinal cord injury, pelvic organ prolapse, and urethral strictures. This book on practical functional urology will help urologists, urogynecologists, and others to diagnose and treat these functional disorders. The theoretical background and scientific basis are summarized, but the emphasis is very much on clinical practice. Diagnosis and treatment are presented for a variety of conditions, including overactive bladder, detrusor underactivity, painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis, prostatitis, stress urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary tract infections, and urethral disorders. The content is based on the EAU guidelines, and for each disorder, helpful tips and tricks are highlighted.
