15 Irish Fiddle Airs - Duets and Trios: Turlough O'Carolan - Easy to Intermediate

This book contains 15 Irish airs arranged as fiddle (violin) duets and trios from melodies composed by Turlough O'Carolan. Carolan was a blind Irish poet, composer, and traveling harper who lived from 1670 - 1738. Each song has a melody and two melodic harmonies to choose from. The songs can be played as duets repeated using the different harmonies, or all parts can be played at the same time to form a violin trio. The tunes are airs, and are therefore played at a slower tempo than a lot of traditional Irish fiddle music. All of these arrangements can be played in 1st position, making it an approachable book for beginner and intermediate violin players. The difficulty level varies for the di...

The Story of the Irish Harp

Since early times in Ireland and nearby Celtic lands, the Irish harp and its music have captivated musicians and audiences alike. Numerous historical aspects, such as the function of the harper at Tara, the seat of ancient Irish kings, is explored in this comprehensive history of the harp of Ireland. Through the ages, the harp has been a symbol of the lyrical nature of Ireland and the Irish people. This book explores the reawakening of this beautiful instrument in Ireland and around the world in the mid-twentieth century and beyond, touching on the quite recent development of the popular Folk and Celtic harps of today.

O'Carolan's Tunes for Treble/Alto Recorder

Turlough O'Carolan was born in County Meath, Ireland in 1670. He was trained as a youth to play the harp, and throughout his life composed a large number of songs. O'Carolan developed a personal style, containing melodic elements of Irish folk music, courtly harp music and Italian baroque music. O'Carolan's music was not published during his lifetime; therefore, various versions of his melodies have been handed down through the aural tradition. It is also not known how he accompanied his melodies. This collection presents 39 favorite O'Carolan melodies in easily playable, lively arrangements for alto (treble) recorder, with guitar chords above the staves. Included are four original melodies by Richard Voss inspired by and in the style of the early master.

While held hostage by fundamentalist Shi'ite militiamen in the suburbs of Beirut, Brian Keenan was visited and sustained by the presence of Turlough O'Carolan - the legendary blind Irish harper of the seventeenth century. This novel is thus a re-creation of an extraordinary historical story and a personal debt repaid. It is also, obliquely, a parallel life - another life imprisoned, shaped by the dark.Narrated largely by O'Carolan from his death-bed, and through the recollections of those closest to him, Turlough powerfully brings to life a lost Ireland of famine and disease, eviction and oppression. Stalking through the broken and dispossessed comes Turlough O'Carolan, the musical prodigy, ...
