High energy physics (HEP) has a crucial role in the context of fundamental physics. The exploration of the subnuclear world is done through increasingly complex experiments covering a wide range of energies and in a large variety of environments ? from particle accelerators and underground detectors to satellites and space laboratories. For these research programs to succeed, novel techniques, new materials and new instrumentation need to be used in detectors, often on a large scale. Hence, particle physics is at the forefront of technological advancement and leads to numerous applications. Among these, medical applications have a particular importance due to the health and social benefits they bring. The subject of the workshop was the Gallium Arsenide and related compounds devices for Physics research and applications. The topics were the GaAs detectors for the experimental apparatus, the characterisation of the materials and the detectors, the GaAs electronics and optoelectronics, the radiation hardness and the x-ray detectors for x-ray imaging in medical applications. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss the status of the art of these fields in view of the construction of devices for the stringent demands imposed by the future Physics experiments and the applications in term of speed and radiation hardness.
