Protecting Europe against large-scale cyber attacks
The issue of large-scale cyber-attacks on the internet has moved up the international agenda recently. This inquiry looks at how States and their major organisations can defend themselves and their critical information infrastructures (CIIs) against such attacks. Whilst individual States bear primary responsibility for their critical national infrastructure (CNI), the infrastructures are heavily interdependent. The Internet is a 'global network of networks' and individual States cannot be viewed in isolation. The Committee therefore concludes that continuing intervention at EU level was appropriate and that all Member States have an interest in bringing the defences of the least protected up. The Committee also looked at ENISA, the European Network and Information Security Agency, and they believe that with a widening of its mandate it can play a more significant part in the developments envisaged.

This year's topics are focused on the World Energy Crisis and more specifically on the future of nuclear power, the sustainability of biofuels and nuclear waste. On Global Monitoring of the Planet we have focused on the climate change issue and specifically on the theoretical basis for model calculations, on vector-borne and air-borne particulates disseminating diseases and the crisis in internet security. A full day session was devoted to the Disarmament and Proliferation Regime, in collaboration with the Government of Italy and international institutions.
Privacy-Invading Technologies and Privacy by Design
Privacy-invading technologies (PITs) such as Body scanners; Public space CCTV microphones; Public space CCTV loudspeakers and Human-implantable microchips (RFID implants/GPS implants) are dealt with in this book. The book shows how and why laws that regulate the design and development of privacy-invading technologies (PITs) may more effectively ensure the protection of privacy than laws that only regulate data controllers and the use of such technologies. The premise is supported and demonstrated through a discussion on these four specific PITs as case studies. In doing so, the book overall attempts to explain how laws/regulations that mandate the implementation of Privacy by Design (PBD) could potentially serve as a viable approach for collectively safeguarding privacy, liberty and security in the 21st Century. This book will be of interest to academic researchers, law practitioners, policy makers and technology researchers.

Virtually all organisations collect, use, process and share personal data from their employees, customers and/or citizens. In doing so, they may be exposing themselves to risks, from threats and vulnerabilities, of that data being breached or compromised by negligent or wayward employees, hackers, the police, intelligence agencies or third-party service providers. On the medical side, we have investigated the Alzheimer epidemics and the role of infectious agents in cancer.

International Seminar On Planetary Emergencies - 45th Session: The Role Of Science In The Third Millennium
Proceedings of the 45th Session of the International Seminars on Nuclear War and Planetary Emergencies held in Erice, Sicily. This Seminar has again gathered, in 2012, over one hundred scientists from 43 countries in an interdisciplinary effort that has been going on for the last 31 years, to examine and analyze planetary problems which had been followed up, all year long, by the World Federation of Scientists' Permanent Monitoring Panels.
