Multi-Treatment Modalities of Liver Tumours

Cancer is one of the major health problems of our time and liver cancer is responsible for over one million deaths per year world-wide, making it the fourth most common cause of death from cancer. Surgical resection of the tumour(s) is the treatment of choice and offers the only chance of prolonged survival. Yet the best attempts are often frustrated by either advanced or co-existent disease that renders the patient non-resectable. This book tackles the many options available to doctors and patients in an attempt to combat this desperate disease.

Heterogeneity in Breast Cancer: Clinical and Therapeutic Implications

Breast cancer is a highly heterogeneous disease. Despite advances in early detection and treatment, breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide. Heterogeneity negatively affects a patient’s prognosis, treatment sensitivity, and clinical outcome. In particular, the development of drug resistance mechanisms and the failure of anticancer drugs (initially or subsequently) could lie in the heterogeneity among BC patients and tumors. The major international guidelines have adopted an immunophenotypic sub-classification of BC to maximize patient eligibility for personalized therapy but do not take into account the extreme diversity existing between breast tumors (intratumor heterogeneity).

Biomarkers and Immunotherapy for Genitourinary Tumors

Genitourinary tumors consist of a large variety of malignancies located in the urinary and the reproductive systems, mainly including prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and renal tumors. Apart from surgeries, various systemic treatments have been used for the whole-course management of genitourinary tumors, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy. However, the characteristics of progression, metastasis, and drug resistance deriving from tumors require and breed novel treatments. Furthermore, exploring biomarkers of genitourinary tumors at the early stage is also beneficial to strengthen the management of patients with tumors. Additionally, the diagnostic and prognostic ...

This biography illuminates the life of Ennio De Giorgi, a mathematical genius in parallel with John Nash, the Nobel Prize Winner and protagonist of A Beautiful Mind. Beginning with his childhood and early years of research, into his solution of the 19th problem of Hilbert and his professorship, this book pushes beyond De Giorgi’s rich contributions to the mathematics community, to present his work in human rights, including involvement in the fight for Leonid Plyushch’s freedom and the defense of dissident Uruguayan mathematician José Luis Massera. Considered by many to be the greatest Italian analyst of the twentieth century, De Giorgi is described in this volume in full through documents and direct interviews with friends, family, colleagues, and former students.

Molecular Genetics and Emerging Therapies for Epithelial Ovarian Cancer: Basic Research and Clinical Perspectives

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most lethal gynecological disorder due to a lack of effective early detection strategies. Worldwide, approximately 230,000 women are diagnosed annually, whereas 150,000 die. It represents the seventh most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the world with 5-year survival rate of 46%. More than one-fifth of EOC have been related to hereditary conditions. Considerable efforts have been made to implement screening of the general population to diagnose EOC early; nevertheless, this has been ineffective and there is no approved strategy. Nowadays, new approaches for early diagnosis and prevention based on molecular genomics are in development. Whole gen...
