Early Days of X-ray Crystallography

2012 marked the centenary of one of the most significant discoveries of the early twentieth century, the discovery of X-ray diffraction (March 1912, by Laue, Friedrich, and Knipping) and of Bragg's law (November 1912). The discovery of X-ray diffraction confirmed the wave nature of X-rays and the space-lattice hypothesis. It had two major consequences: the analysis of the structure of atoms, and the determination of the atomic structure of materials. This had a momentous impact in chemistry, physics, mineralogy, material science, and biology. This book relates the discovery itself, the early days of X-ray crystallography, and the way the news of the discovery spread round the world. It expla...

Photochromism is simply defined as the light induced reversible change of colour. The field has developed rapidly during the past decade as a result of attempts to improve the established materials and to discover new devices for applications. As photochromism bridges molecular, supramolecular and solid state chemistry, as well as organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, such a treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach and a broad presentation. The first edition (1990) provided an enormous amount of new concepts and data, such as the presentation of main families based on the pericyclic reaction mechanism, the review of new families, some bimolecular photocycloadditions and some promi...

Nutrition Management of Patients with Inherited Metabolic Disorders

5 Stars! Doody's Book Review Written by the foremost nutritionists in the United States, each of whom has more than 15 years of clinical experience providing nutrition management of patients with an inherited metabolic disorder (IMD), Nutrition Management of Patients with Inherited Metabolic Disorders supplies information to enhance the knowledge and skills needed by nutritionists/dietitians and other health care professionals who provide services to patients with IMDs. Many disorders that are disastrous to patients have been diagnosed and managed by diet, improving neurological and physical outcomes. However, nutrition problems still occur, whether due to the quality of the medical foods, inadequate prescription by health care providers or poor diet adherence by the patient. This book describes these problems and helps medical food manufacturers, medical geneticists, nutritionists/dietitians, and other health care providers find alternative forms of nutrients that would provide optimal nutrition and health for the patients.

An interdisciplinary discussion of key materials issues and controversies in strained layer epitaxy is presented in this new volume from MRS. Research involving GeSi alloys and Si:C alloys are well represented. In the case of GeSi alloys, utilizing both strained and relaxed structures appears to be a strong component of the current research. Applications, devices and synthesis of improved relaxed and strained materials are featured. Special efforts to integrate the III-V and IV communities were also made during this symposium, and those efforts are reflected in the proceedings volume as well. Results on compositional graded layers in both the GeSi and III-V materials systems are presented. Topics include: general issues; ordering/low dimensional structures; characterization; device applications; growth of Si-based materials; and growth of compound semiconductors.
