Interplay between NO Signalling, ROS and the Antioxidant System in Plants
Over the last decades, nitric oxide (NO) has emerged as an essential player in redox signalling. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) also act as signals throughout all stages of plant life. Because they are potentially harmful for cellular integrity, ROS and NO levels must be tightly controlled, especially by the classical antioxidant system and additional redox-active metabolites and proteins. Recent work provided evidence that NO and ROS influence each other’s biosynthesis and removal. Moreover, novel signalling molecules resulting from the chemical reaction between NO, ROS and plant metabolites have been highlighted, including N2O3, ONOO-, NO2, S-nitrosoglutathione and 8-NO2 cGMP. They are involved in diverse plant physiological processes, the best characterized being stomata regulation and stress defense. Taken together, these new data demonstrate the complex interactions between NO, ROS signalling and the antioxidant system. This Frontiers in Plant Science Research Topic aims to provide an updated and complete overview of this important and rapidly expanding area through original article and detailed reviews.

Do we need antibacterial garbage bags? A wide range of antibacterial consumer articles can be found on the Internet. Mostly there is no information on the antibacterial agents used or on their efficacy.Does this relate to bacterial resistance to antibiotics? The release of antibacterial agents from these articles creates a constant low exposure for microorganisms.This may help accelerating the development of bacterial resistance. Important research is on-going. Can we know if an article contains antibacterial agents? New rules in EU legislation apply for treated articles. When implemented, information will be given if an article is treated for antibacterial effects and the claimed effects will be substantiated. A strategy to prevent unjustified antibacterial articles was outlined by Nordic authority representatives, initiated by the Swedish presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Empirical Approaches to the Phonological Structure of Words
One of the basic grammatical categories in linguistics is the phonological word. But how are words made up in terms of their sounds? And how is the information on the sound structure of words used in the processing of words? The multidimensionality of the phonological word relates it to semantics, morphology, phonology and syntax. It is nevertheless a category that has only been an object of serious study since the prosodic turn in phonology and thus cannot be considered an established category of grammatical description.
