World Urbanization Prospects
The report presents findings from the 2018 revision of World Urbanization Prospects, which contains the latest estimates of the urban and rural populations or areas from 1950 to 2018 and projections to 2050, as well as estimates of population size from 1950 to 2018 and projections to 2030 for all urban agglomerations with 300,000 inhabitants or more in 2018. The world urban population is at an all-time high, and the share of urban dwellers, is projected to represent two thirds of the global population in 2050. Continued urbanization will bring new opportunities and challenges for sustainable development.
World Population Ageing, 1950-2050
Population ageing is an enduring and global phenomenon which is the result of the demographic transition from high to low levels of fertility and mortality. This report considers the process of population ageing for the world as a whole; for developed and developing regions; for major areas and regions; and for individual countries. It contains demographic profiles covering the period 1950 to 2050 for each country giving a range of socio-economic and demographic indicators which highlight population ageing trends. The report finds that by 2050, the number of older persons (those aged 60 years or over) in the world will exceed the number of young persons (aged under 15 years) for the first time in history. This will have major social, economic and political implications including the effects on economic growth and labour markets, pensions and health care, family composition and housing, migration trends and voting patterns.
World Population Prospects
The 2015 Revision will build on the previous revision by incorporating the findings of new population censuses and specialized demographic surveys, which have been published since the previous revision. This comprehensive review of worldwide demographic trends and future prospects is essential for assessing the degree of progress made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to guide policies aimed at achieving the new post-2015 development agenda, which Member States will adopt this fall. Population, Education and Development
As requested by the Economic and Social Council, the Population Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat, annually prepares the world population monitoring report on the topic of that year's session of the Commission. The fullreport is accompanied by a summarized version, the "concise report".The report covers topics such as trends in population, education and development; education and entry into reproductive life; the interrelationships between education and fertility; education, health and mortality; and education and international migration. The report finds that education plays a key role in national development, besides being a prime component of individual well-being.
Population Growth, Structure and Distribution
This concise report reviews the demographic changes in population size and growth in the world and its urban and rural areas; the changes in mortality, fertility and migration that underlie these changes; and the population policies that governments have adopted to address their concerns with national aspects of population and development. It concludes with a review of the state of knowledge on the interrelationships of population with poverty, food and the environment.
World Population Prospects
This report presents the 2010 Revision of the population estimates and projections prepared by the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat. The 2010 Revision constitutes the twenty second round of the global population estimates and projections produced by the Population Division since 1951 and it breaks new ground in the production of population projections. For the first time, projections are carried out up to 2100, instead of 2050 as previously. In order to extend the projection period to 2100, a new method for the projection of fertility was developed. The method used in the 2010 Revision is based on the advances made in projecting fertility since the 2000 Revision, advances that have been combined with a probabilistic approach to yield the future paths of fertility used in producing the medium variant of the 2010 Revision. This data booklet presents key population indicators at the global and regional levels and highlights current and future patterns and trends of fertility, mortality and international migration. Data presented in this booklet are based on the 2019 Revision of the World Population Prospects, the latest global demographic estimates, and projections prepared by the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat. The 2019 Revision provides a comprehensive set of demographic data and indicators to assess population trends at the global, regional and national levels and to calculate many other key indicators commonly used by the United Nations system.
Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses
The population and housing census is part of an integrated national statistical system, which may include other censuses (for example, agriculture), surveys, registers and administrative files. It provides, at regular intervals, the benchmark for population count at national and local levels. For small geographical areas or sub-populations, it may represent the only source of information for certain social, demographic and economic characteristics. For many countries the census also provides a solid framework to develop sampling frames. This publication represents one of the pillars for data collection on the number and characteristics of the population of a country.
