"This target was selected for study in order to secure information on the effectiveness of strategic bombing on powder manufacturing plants. Information was also desired concerning the effectiveness of the various types of HE and incendiary bombs used, and the ability of a plant of this type to withstand them. The Angouleme National Powder Plant was located in the town of Angouleme and was engaged in the manufacture of nitro-cellulose ... There was only one attack on the plant, and this was made by an RAF force of 20 Lancasters on 20 March 1944 ... The plant is located on the south and east banks of a sharp bend in the Charente River about two and one-half miles northeast of Angouleme. It was one of four French state explosive works which were used by the Germans for the manufacture of propellants. Besides its main output of nitrocellulose, which was sent to St-Madard-en-Jalles for processing into powder, the Angouleme plant manufactured nitroglycerin, penthrite, amotol, absorbent charcoal for gas masks, sulphuric acid and black powder"--Page 1
