Vulnerability Studies in the Americas
This book is the result of a seven-year project that involved the countries of Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Canada in assessing climate change, climate change vulnerability, and adaptive capacity. It employs a unique methodology for integrating the findings brought together here, and fills a gap in academic literature in relation to case studies on South America in English, comparative case studies of the global North and South and vulnerability assessment.
Indigenous in the City
Research on Indigenous issues rarely focuses on life in major metropolitan centres. Instead, there is a tendency to frame rural locations as emblematic of authentic or “real” Indigeneity. While such a perspective may support Indigenous struggles for territory and recognition, it fails to account for large swaths of contemporary Indigenous realities, including the increased presence of Indigenous people in cities. The contributors to this volume explore the implications of urbanization on the production of distinctive Indigenous identities in Canada, the US, New Zealand, and Australia. In doing so, they demonstrate the resilience, creativity, and complexity of the urban Indigenous presence, both in Canada and internationally.
A Cultural Sociology of Anglican Mission and the Indian Residential Schools in Canada
This book focuses on the recurring struggle over the meaning of the Anglican Church’s role in the Indian residential schools--a long-running school system designed to assimilate Indigenous children into Euro-Canadian culture, in which sexual, psychological, and physical abuse were common. From the end of the nineteenth century until the outset of twenty-first century, the meaning of the Indian residential schools underwent a protracted transformation. Once a symbol of the Church’s sacred mission to Christianize and civilize Indigenous children, they are now associated with colonialism and suffering. In bringing this transformation to light, the book addresses why the Church was so quick to become involved in the Indian residential schools and why acknowledgment of their deleterious impact was so protracted. In doing so, the book adds to our understanding of the sociological process by which perpetrators come to recognize themselves as such.
The Prairie Agrarian Movement Revisited
"The formation of the Territorial Grain Growers Association in 1901 was not the only important event in the early history of what has come to be known broadly as the agrarian movement in the Canadian prairies, but it was a defining moment in some respects. Arguably it signalled the formation of an agrarian class, but at least it was an indicator of an awakening of a democratic consciousness among family farmers. Ultimately, the Association provided a venue for analysis and critique, the development of strategies and tactics, and of course the nurturing of leadership and organizational forms that would have a profound influence upon politics and the state in the three prairie provinces and the Dominion, as well as the creation of co-operatives and other forms of direct action. The Ecoregions of Saskatchewan
This book describes the ecoregions of Saskatchewan, following a hierarchical framework for terrestrial ecosystems in Canada. The introduction reviews ecological land classification and the various interrelated factors that are involved in the development of ecosystems: geology, water, climate, vegetation, soils, wildlife, and human impacts. The main section describes the province within the context of the four ecozones and 11 ecoregions that were identified in the framework. For each ecoregion, the book provides a description of the physical setting, such as geology & climate, as well as the biological features that have developed in response to this physical environment. The impact of human activities on the ecology of the area concludes each of these descriptions. Appendices include lists of animal & plant species found in Saskatchewan and a glossary.
The Assiniboine
Edwin Thompson Denig was assigned as the post bookkeeper at Fort Union on the Upper Missouri in 1837 by the American Fur Company. He spent close to two decades there and married into the Assiniboine. In the summer of 1851, Father Pierre Jean de Smet spent two weeks at Fort Union. He encouraged Denig to write a number of sketches of the manners and customs of the Assiniboine and neighboring tribes. Denig compiled additional information in response to queries by early ethnographers, including Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, who were collecting ethnological information about Indian tribes in the United States.
Adaptive Governance of Disaster
This book provides a comparative analysis of policy instruments designed to respond to climate change, drought and floods in connection with agricultural producers and their communities in four case study areas: Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada; Coquimbo, Chile; and Mendoza, Argentina. Assessed from the standpoint of effectiveness and adaptive governance, instruments for improving the livelihood capitals of agricultural producers are identified and recommendations to improve the suite of policy instruments are put forward.

CCF Colonialism in Northern Saskatchewan
Often remembered for its humanitarian platform and its pioneering social programs, Saskatchewan’s Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) wrought a much less scrutinized legacy in the northern regions of the province during the twenty years it governed. Until the 1940s churches, fur traders, and other wealthy outsiders held uncontested control over Saskatchewan’s northern region.
