In a stately Zurich Villa, an unexplained case of fire results in a fatality. Was it arson, and if so, what could have been the motive? Greed, sabotage? Or was the cause simply carelessness? The narrator, a disillusioned journalist, is hired to play detective. His client is a former tobacco merchant who became a missionary do-gooder in old age. The old man wants to know more about the life of his nephew, an engineer, who looks critically at social trends. Underlying the investigation of the fire case, there is a quiet struggle between the journalist's moral attitude and the engineer's sense of responsibility. In the end, they both contribute to the solution of the fire case.
Nick Baumgarten’s team, at full complement again with Pino Beltrametti on board, sees itself confronted with the violent death of a professor. As usual, the investigators are called on to struggle on several fronts at once: the campus of the Brugg-Windisch University of Applied Sciences, where they must cut through a thicket of intrigues, rivalries and a love affair; internally, where District Attorney Cécile Dumont picks apart their theories and insists on solid evidence; and in the local press, where journalist Steff Schwager, tortured by jealousy, vents his spleen. It helps that Nick Baumgarten has at least found happiness in his private life.
Nora is single, and she works as a typist in a law firm. Her life is gray and monotonous and characterized by lovelessness. Only reading novels brings color into her everyday life, but without awakening any longings. Before her fiftieth birthday, experiences accumulate that make her doubt her previous life. Can she overcome the crisis and turn her life around? The novel describes the female counterpart to the character of Gerold Trank in "Time Reclaimed" by the same author.
Thomas Kremer, an investigator for the Zurich prosecutor’s office, is looking into a case of possible corruption that relates to the sale of a private clinic. Kremer, a maverick, always thinks for himself; he can never be talked into believing anything. While obsessively investigating the case, he discovers a web of lies and manipulations. Rejecting the harmless explanations that he‘s offered, he butts heads with government officials and financiers, rubbing them the wrong way with his blunt approach. It’s no different in his personal life – half-Jewish, he‘s particularly sensitive to the modern-day anti-Semitism in the media, as well as in his own surroundings. He doesn’t shy away from exposing contradictions and drawing uncomfortable conclusions.
The theme of this collection is a discussion of the notions of 'norms' and 'standards', which are studied from various different angles, but always in relation to the English language. These terms are to be understood in a very wide sense, allowing discussions of topics such as the norms we orient to in social interaction, the benchmark employed in teaching, or the development of English dialects and varieties over time and space and their relation to the standard language. The collection is organized into three parts, each of which covers an important research field for the study of norms and standards. Part 1 is entitled "English over time and space" and is further divided into three thema...
