This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the International Workshop on Deception, Fraud, and Trust in Agent Societies, held in Bologna, Italy in July 2002 during AAMAS 2002. Most papers presented were carefully selected from the workshop contributions during two rounds of reviewing and revision; a few papers were particularly solicited in order to provide complete coverage of all relevant topics. All relevant aspects of the field are addressed.
Design and Applications of Intelligent Agents
PRIMA 2000 was the third in the series of Paci c Rim International Workshops on Multi-Agents. It was held on August 28-29, 2000, in Melbourne, Australia in conjunction with the Paci c Rim International Conference on Arti cial Intel- gence 2000. PRIMA is the main forum for the agent or multi-agent researchers in paci c rim countries to exchange and discuss their research results. This volume contains selected papers from PRIMA 2000. It covers theory, design, and applications of intelligent agents. The speci c aspects include co- dination, negotiation, learning, architecture, speci cation, allocation, and app- cation of intelligent agents. All papers are of high quality because each of them was reviewed and recommended by at least two international renowned program committee members. Many people contributed to this volume. We would like to thank all the a- hors who submitted papers to the workshop. Many thanks also to the members of the program committee who diligently reviewed all the papers. Finally, we thank the editorial sta of Springer-Verlag for publishing this volume in the Lecture Notes in Arti cial Intelligence series.
Engineering Self-Organising Systems
As information handling systems get more and more complex, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage them using traditional approaches based on centralized and pre-defined control mechanisms. Over recent years, there has been a significant increase in taking inspiration from biology, the physical world, chemistry, and social systems to more efficiently manage such systems - generally based on the concept of self-organisation; this gave rise to self-organising applications. This book constitutes a reference and starting point for establishing the field of engineering self-organising applications. It comprises revised and extended papers presented at the Engineering Self-Organising Applications Workshop, ESOA 2003, held at AAMAS 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, in July 2003 and selected invited papers from leading researchers in self-organisation. The book is organized in parts on applications, natural metaphors (multi-cells and genetic algorithms, stigmergy, and atoms and evolution), artificial interaction mechanisms, middleware, and methods and tools.
Distributed Artificial Intelligence
Distributed Artificial Intelligence presents a collection of papers describing the state of research in distributed artificial intelligence (DAI). DAI is concerned with the cooperative solution of problems by a decentralized group of agents. The agents may range from simple processing elements to complex entities exhibiting rational behavior. The book is organized into three parts. Part I addresses ways to develop control abstractions that efficiently guide problem-solving; communication abstractions that yield cooperation; and description abstractions that result in effective organizational structure. Part II describes architectures for developing and testing DAI systems. Part III discusses applications of DAI in manufacturing, office automation, and man-machine interactions. This book is intended for researchers, system developers, and students in artificial intelligence and related disciplines. It can also be used as a reference for students and researchers in other disciplines, such as psychology, philosophy, robotics, and distributed computing, who wish to understand the issues of DAI.

Agents and Peer-to-Peer Computing
Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing is currently attracting enormous public attention, spurred by the popularity of file-sharing systems such as Napster, Gnutella, and Morpheus. In P2P systems a very large number of autonomous computing nodes, the peers, rely on each other for services. P2P networks are emerging as a new distributed computing paradigm because of their potential to harness the computing power of the hosts composing the network, and because they make their underutilized resources available to each other. Three especially commissioned invited articles appear in this volume: an introduction, and revised versions of the papers presented at the 1st International Workshop on Agents and Peer-to-Peer Computing, AP2PC 2002, held in Bologna, Italy in July 2002. The book is organized into topical sections on peer-to-peer services, discovery and delivery of trustworthy services, and search and cooperation in peer-to-peer agent systems.
