This book is the only scientific biography of the Nobel Prize–winning Indian American chemist, Har Gobind Khorana. It begins with the story of Khorana’s origins in poverty in rural India and how he manages to emerge from that to be trained in chemistry in Britain and Switzerland before immigrating to Canada and the United States. Science was the dominant focus of Khorana’s life, and his biography is treated chronologically in conjunction with his scientific career. The book explains in detail Khorana’s most important scientific achievements, his role in deciphering the genetic code (the reason for his Nobel Prize), the first synthesis of a functional gene in the laboratory, the elucidation of the idea behind the PCR technology that has since become ubiquitous in biotech, and his seminal studies of how structure determines the function of biological macromolecules in membranes. Finally, it focuses on his scientific legacy, and what his career means for future generations of scientists.

Chemical Biology, Selected Papers Of H G Khorana (With Introductions)

The first two chapters of this invaluable book trace the developments of the chemistry and macromolecular structures, respectively, of proteins and nuclei acids. Similarly, the introductions to the succeeding chapters review, step by step, the historical landmarks in the topics covered. These include discoveries of biological phosphate esters, nucleotides and nucleotide coenzymes (important in intermediary metabolism), the nature of the genetic material and biological synthesis of proteins, formulation of the problem of the genetic code, and perspectives on bioenergetics. The selected papers illustrate the developments of the chemical synthesis of nucleotides and nucleotide coenzymes of ribo-...

RNA and Protein Synthesis is a compendium of articles dealing with the assay, characterization, isolation, or purification of various organelles, enzymes, nucleic acids, translational factors, and other components or reactions involved in protein synthesis. One paper describes the preparatory scale methods for the reversed-phase chromatography systems for transfer ribonucleic acids. Another paper discusses the determination of adenosine- and aminoacyl adenosine-terminated sRNA chains by ion-exclusion chromatography. One paper notes that the problems involved in preparing acetylaminoacyl-tRNA are similar to those found in peptidyl-tRNA synthesis, in particular, to the lability of the ester bo...

Adaptation to Life at High Salt Concentrations in Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya

Salt is an essential requirement of life. Already from ancient times (e. g. , see the books of the Bible) its importance in human life has been known. For example, salt symbolizes destruction (as in Sodom and Gomorra), but on the other hand it has been an ingredient of every sacrifice during the Holy Temple periods. Microbial life in concentrated salt solutions has fascinated scientists since its discovery. Recently there have been several international meetings and books devoted entirely to halophiles. This book includes the proceedings of the “Halophiles 2004” conference held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in September 2004 (www. u- lj. si/~bfbhaloph/index. html). This meeting was attended by...

Cardiac Cell and Gene Transfer

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in developed countries. Recent experimental advances featuring cellular, molecular, and genetic tools and technologies offer the potential for new therapeutic strategies directed toward remediation of inherited and acquired heart diseases. Whether these recent basic science advances will ultimately translate to clinical efficacy for patients with heart disease is unknown and is important to ascertain. Cardiac Cell and Gene Transfer: Principles, Protocols, and Applications is designed to provide the reader with up-to-date coverage of a myriad of specific methodo- gies and protocols for gene and cell transfer to the myocardium. Each chapter features ...
