Glisterings: LaTeX and Other Oddments
This collection of Glisterings columns primarily covers LaTeX topics, with excursions into fonts, graphics, bookbinding, and more. The focus is on practical answers to specific questions posed by users. Generally, several answers are presented with accompanying discussion. The Glisterings column was a popular feature in TUGboat, the journal of the TeX Users Group, from 2001 to 2017. The present volume collects all published columns, and adds a comprehensive bibliography and index, along with a few updates to the text, as needed. TeX is a sophisticated typesetting system that has been in widespread use since approximately 1980. TeX's originator, Donald Knuth, structured the system so users could add functionality. It remains the state of the art. The TeX Users Group (TUG) is a membership-based non-profit organization founded in 1980, for those who have an interest in typesetting, typography and font design and/or are users of the TeX typesetting system. Forms of Modernity
It's a critical cliché that Cervantes' Don Quixote is the first modern novel, but this distinction raises two fundamental questions. First, how does one define a novel? And second, what is the relationship between this genre and understandings of modernity? A Modern Pilgrim in Mecca and a Siege in Sanaa
In 1908, Arthur Wavell left England to begin his journey to Mecca, determined to find out more about Arab customs with a view to future adventures into the unexplored interior of Arabia. Due to the suspicion a westerner would arouse, and the fact that unbelievers were forbidden by the authorities to enter Mecca, he undertook his pilgrimage in disguise. His journey to Damascus, Medina, and finally Mecca with his two companions-a Swahili Muslim from Mombasa and an Arab from Aleppo-is detailed in the first part of this reprint, which was originally published in 1912. Additionally, the book describes Wavell's abortive attempt to explore south central Arabia, including his capture and expulsion from Yemen by the Turkish authorities. A Modern Pilgrim in Mecca, now back in print, will be of great value to historians, to scholars of the region or period, and to armchair adventurers.
