Adaptive Protection of the Heart

Published in 1991: This book explores the possibilities of protecting the heart against stress and ischemia through adaptation to intermittent hypoxia or to mild, nondamaging stress exposure. These possibilities are based on studies that show an increase in the potency and efficiency of stress-limiting systems when subjected to repeated stress actions, adaptation to high altitude hypoxia, or adaptation to increased physical loads. Any stress reaction is coupled with an activation of central and local stress-limiting systems, such as GABA-ergic, opioidergic, and serotonergic systems in the brain, as well as antioxidants, prostaglandins, and adenosine in executory organs. The book also presents the use of metabolites of stress-limiting systems rather than adaptation as a means to prevent cardiac arrythmias. It also discusses genetically determined deficiencies of stress-limiting systems and their role in the etiology of stress-induced diseases. Cardiologists and researchers studying stress and its effect on cardiovascular systems will find this book extremely useful.

Adaptation Biology and Medicine

Molecular basis of gradual adaptation of body systems in stressful conditions is a great mystery of biology. Such an adaptation not only increases tolerance of the body to that given stress but also to other challenges. An understanding of this cross protection needs to be exploited to improve patient care. The book includes 25 chapters describing molecular, subcellular and organ biology. Although for an easy reading the information has been grouped under the sub-headings: Adaptation to Cardiovascular Stresses, Adaptation to Neurohumoral Stresses, Adaptation to Other Stresses, the book represents a common continuum of adaptations. The therapeutic value of the understanding of the science of adaptation has also been described in several chapters. Examples of cross adaptations are also provided, where repeated exposure to one stimulus may have applications in the treatment and prophylaxis of different diseases. The present book will be of great interest to all biologists, physiologists, pharmacologiss and physicians interested in the application of the biology of adaptation in the improvement of health.

All scientific claims indicate one result that food and nutrition is an integral part of medicine while medicine can not show its curing potential without a correct and complementary food and nutrition. A blood thinning (anticoagulant) drug when combined with too much blood thinning food consumption can increase the risk of internal bleeding risk and may be fatal. Bergamottin in grapefruit can inhibit the activity of liver enzymes and can cause the accumulation of radio and chemotherapeutic agents in blood which can increase the side effects of such anti-carcinogen treatments. Similarly, fibers which are introduced as healthy food components with their weight loosing and cancer protecting ef...

Intermittent Hypoxia and Human Diseases

Intermittent hypoxia can cause significant structural and functional impact on the systemic, organic, cellular and molecular processes of human physiology and pathophysiology. This book focuses on the most updated scientific understanding of the adaptive (beneficial) and maladaptive (detrimental) responses to intermittent hypoxia and their potential pathogenetic or prophylactic roles in the development and progression of major human diseases. This is a comprehensive monograph for clinicians, research scientists, academic faculty, postgraduate and medical students, and allied health professionals who are interested in enhancing their up-to-date knowledge of intermittent hypoxia research and its translational applications in preventing and treating major human diseases.
