The Oxford Handbook of Deification

This handbook offers a comprehensive and varied study of deification within Christian theology. Forty-six leading experts in the field examine points of convergence and difference on the constitutive elements of deification across different writers, thinkers, and traditions.

Analysis Meets Geometry

This book is dedicated to the memory of Mikael Passare, an outstanding Swedish mathematician who devoted his life to developing the theory of analytic functions in several complex variables and exploring geometric ideas first-hand. It includes several papers describing Mikael’s life as well as his contributions to mathematics, written by friends of Mikael’s who share his attitude and passion for science. A major section of the book presents original research articles that further develop Mikael’s ideas and which were written by his former students and co-authors. All these mathematicians work at the interface of analysis and geometry, and Mikael’s impact on their research cannot be underestimated. Most of the contributors were invited speakers at the conference organized at Stockholm University in his honor. This book is an attempt to express our gratitude towards this great mathematician, who left us full of energy and new creative mathematical ideas.

Tropical Algebraic Geometry

These notes present a polished introduction to tropical geometry and contain some applications of this rapidly developing and attractive subject. It consists of three chapters which complete each other and give a possibility for non-specialists to make the first steps in the subject which is not yet well represented in the literature. The notes are based on a seminar at the Mathematical Research Center in Oberwolfach in October 2004. The intended audience is graduate, post-graduate, and Ph.D. students as well as established researchers in mathematics.

Topology, Ergodic Theory, Real Algebraic Geometry

This volume is dedicated to the memory of the Russian mathematician, V.A. Rokhlin (1919-1984). It is a collection of research papers written by his former students and followers, who are now experts in their fields. The topics in this volume include topology (the Morse-Novikov theory, spin bordisms in dimension 6, and skein modules of links), real algebraic geometry (real algebraic curves, plane algebraic surfaces, algebraic links, and complex orientations), dynamics (ergodicity, amenability, and random bundle transformations), geometry of Riemannian manifolds, theory of Teichmuller spaces, measure theory, etc. The book also includes a biography of Rokhlin by Vershik and two articles which should prove of historical interest.

Real Algebraic Varieties

This book gives a systematic presentation of real algebraic varieties. Real algebraic varieties are ubiquitous. They are the first objects encountered when learning of coordinates, then equations, but the systematic study of these objects, however elementary they may be, is formidable. This book is intended for two kinds of audiences: it accompanies the reader, familiar with algebra and geometry at the masters level, in learning the basics of this rich theory, as much as it brings to the most advanced reader many fundamental results often missing from the available literature, the “folklore”. In particular, the introduction of topological methods of the theory to non-specialists is one of...

Real Algebraic Geometry and Topology

This book contains the proceedings of the Real Algebraic Geometry-Topology Conference, held at Michigan State University in December 1993. Presented here are recent results and discussions of new ideas pertaining to such topics as resolution theorems, algebraic structures, topology of nonsingular real algebraic sets, and the distribution of real algebraic sets in projective space.

Geometric Modeling and Algebraic Geometry

Geometric Modeling and Algebraic Geometry, though closely related, are traditionally represented by two almost disjoint scientific communities. Both fields deal with objects defined by algebraic equations, but the objects are studied in different ways. In 12 chapters written by leading experts, this book presents recent results which rely on the interaction of both fields. Some of these results have been obtained from a major European project in geometric modeling.

Aleksey Alekseevich Kharlamov (1840 - 1925)

Vtoraya polovina XIX veka otnositsya k izuchennym periodam v istorii russkogo iskusstva. Izdano nemalo knig, posvyashchennykh kak iskusstvu etogo vremeni v tselom, tak i otdel'nym problemam, a takzhe monografiy o khudozhnikakh. No obshchaya kartina khudozhestvennogo protsessa toy epokhi do sikh por ostaetsya nepolnoy, poskol'ku po-prezhnemu naibolee issledovannym ostaetsya tvorchestvo masterov realisticheskogo napravleniya, i v gorazdo men'shey stepeni osveshcheno tvorchestvo akademistov, salonnykh zhivopistsev. Sredi poslednikh - A.A. Kharlamov (1840 - 1925). Ego imya v nashi dni izvestno glavnym obrazom iskusstvovedam i kollektsioneram. Proizvedeniya etogo khudozhnika est' vo mnogikh muzeyakh Rossii, no bol'shaya chast' ego rabot sosredotochena v chastnykh kollektsiyakh, prezhde vsego v zarubezhnykh. S 1990-kh gg. v svyazi s usileniem v Rossii interesa k salonnomu i akademicheskomu iskusstvu raboty Kharlamova stali vse chashche poyavlyat'sya na vystavkakh i na prestizhnykh khudozhestvennykh auktsionakh. Dannaya kniga yavlyaetsya pervoy monografiey o ego tvorchestve. V Prilozhenii k knige daetsya perepiska khudozhnika s sovremennikami (1870-1911 godov).

Are Christians Mormon?

In the past, scholars and others have asked whether Mormons are Christian. This work reverses the question by asking, "are Christians Mormon?" By identifying Mormon doctrines formerly considered heretical and documenting how these doctrines have gained increasing acceptance within mainstream Christian theologies, the work presents some surprising insights. In chapters focusing on subjects such as deification, the divine feminine, and the reopening of the scriptural canon, among others, the book sets out Joseph Smith's teachings on these ideas, summarizes the criticisms of those positions, and examines trends in contemporary Christian theology that significantly converge in Joseph's direction. Exploring the convergence of contemporary Christian theology with Mormon doctrines, this book will appeal to a broad range of students and readers exploring Christian theology and the Latter-day Saint tradition.

Psychology, Religion, and Spirituality

Over a century ago, psychologists who were fascinated with religion began to study and write about it. Theologians and religious practitioners have responded to this literature, producing a fascinating dialogue that deals with our fundamental und- standings about the human person and our place in the world. This book provides an introduction to the important conversations that have developed out of these interchanges. The dialogue between psychology and religion is difficult to study for a number of reasons. First, it requires knowledge of both psychology and religion. People with a background in psychology often lack a solid understanding of the religious traditions they wish to study, and ...
