Modern Internet Services

Modern World Wide Web provides a variety of services ranging from e-mail and social networking to banking and shopping. It is difficult for service providers to manage these Internet services, because: (1) they exhibit complex structural organization, where component middleware (such as Java EE) is often used as building platform, and (2) complex session- oriented client behavior makes it hard to predict what impact service management mechanisms will have on application behavior. This book presents several new and novel Internet service management techniques that target two interconnected goals: (1) providing improved Quality-of-Service guarantees to the service clients, and (2) optimizing server resource utilization. These mechanism are representatively chosen to validate the claim that exposing and using detailed information about how clients use Internet services enables mechanisms that achieve the range of goals listed above. This book should be useful to all professionals working in the area of Internet services, or anyone else who may be interested in the latest developments in this exciting area of distributed computing systems research and practice.

Embodiments of Will

Embodiments of Will

This book examines the two chief anatomical and physiological embodi-ment theories of voluntary animal motion, which I call the cardiosinew and cerebroneuromuscular theories of motion, from the time of Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) to that of Mondino (d. A.D. 1326). The study of animal motion commenced with the ancient Greek natural scientist Aristotle who wrote the monograph 'On the motion of animals' (De motu animalium). Subsequent inquiries into voluntary animal motion may be found in a variety of Greek, Latin, and Arabic compendia, commentaries, and encyclopedias throughout the ancient and medieval periods. The motion of animals was considered relevant to natural philosophers and theologians investigating the nature of the soul, and to physicians seeking to discover the causes of disorders of voluntary movement such as epilepsy and tetany. The book fills a gap in the scholarly literature concerned with pre-modern studies of the anatomical and physiological mechanisms of will and bodily movement. The accompanying photographs of my own anatomical dissections illuminate ancient and medieval conceptual, empirical, and experimental methods of anatomical and physiological research.

Higher Education Leadership Strategy in the Public Affairs Triumvirate

This book provides a comprehensive approach for colleges rethinking their community policy connections. From a ‘pracademic’ perspective, it introduces a new paradigm for contemporary college and community connections through the evolution of research, scholarship and experience, and the application of the Public Affairs discipline from Higher Education Leadership. The book explains how the public affairs forces of Community, Organization, and Administration offer a unique combination of concepts and theory that can transform practice, develop innovation, strengthen communities, and transform lives through a college partnering in a variety of community projects. The book’s defined ethical composition institutes leadership in the public realm, within the Public Affairs Triumvirate; and its discussion of the ‘science to service to philosophy’ will advance higher education strategy scholarship, creating new ideas for how academia and communities can create sustained connections and partnerships for solving problems in any community.

Get Real

From the Preface: "Get real" was a slang term that became popular in the 1960's when Michael Hickey was growing up in East Boston. It implied that someone wasn't in touch with reality and had to change their way of thinking or living. If you put on the television today, all you might find is one of the hundreds of so-called reality TV shows. More often than not, these reality shows are illusions of reality because the "real persons" utilized as actors/performers are seemingly coached to act in certain ways by the directors, judges, or producers who really control the reality. Nonetheless, reality TV is a modern phenomenon; people watch it constantly, and that does indicate a high degree of t...

Wetland Ecosystems

Exchange of water, heat and other energy components between wetlands and the lower portion of the atmosphere is essential for functioning and development of these ecosystems, and for the decisions related to conservation or modification of wetlands. Transformation of the energy components by key parts of the ecosystem, such as water body and vegetated canopy, and complex exchange between the latter are often described in terms of energy fluxes. In this book, the diurnal and seasonal exchange of water, energy and heat storage is quantified, and compared across three wetland communities: reedgrass, bulrush, and open water. Total water loss is partitioned into surface evaporation and plant canopy transpiration, and examined in terms of main controlling variables. Actual, potential and equilibrium evapotranspiration rates are also examined in the framework of Penman-Monteith and McNaughton-Spriggs models, leading to an improvement in understanding the mechanisms of the water loss in wetlands. This study could be useful for professionals in Natural and Ecosystem Sciences, Hydrology, and in Natural Resources and Water Management.

The book Its Time for My Deliverance is captivating and opens ones eyes to the challenges that the forces of darkness pose to the human soul. The author cogently and carefully introduces us to the presence of evil that widely penetrates into the system of governments and institutions of authority. He underlines some of the subtle ways the enemy could employ to ensnare and capture the individual. Despite the relentless battles that are waged by Satan and his allies, the author highlights the power of Christ in subduing and overcoming every force that comes against the believer. He listed certain steps that should be followed to aid ones deliverance. That faith in Christ is a must. That knowing Christ and accepting him as personal Saviour and Lord is paramount. He strongly advocated prayer as a powerful tool for deliverance. This is the most exciting and powerful tool for deliverance Ive ever read. Dr Kayode Robin-Coker, London Vivid illustrations, powerful imagination, clearly and delightfully presented. Dr Rodney Kuhn King, USA A fresh insight in dealing with pastoral issues. Thankless Toil: My Old Poems Revisited

This is my little book of experimental poetry and also the first book I ever published, as well as my first book that was banned by the authorities of the Islamic Republic; so it was the first in quite a number of things! Full of ideas, this bricolage shows something of my epistemological fascination with Borges and Foucault, with a pinch of Housman's morbid reticence, which all in all pushed me to take up the Songs attributed to Xayyam later on. The subject matters being so diverse, the sole factor that brings the isolated poems together is experimentation itself, which arises from my perpetual concern with writing as a consciously continuous move toward the intensification of the theme plus the distinction of the style. As such, it is a curious combination of staticism and dynamism that I neither know how nor want to reconcile! In the end, I must confess that after all these years when I came to revise the book for this second edition, I surprisingly found myself still liking it!
