This volume makes a comprehensive assessment of the status and quality of early educational experiences at preschool and early primary grades in India. It raises a serious concern that despite high enrolment in preschools, children’s school readiness levels remain low at ages five and six, and raises a vital question---are Indian children getting a sound foundation for school and for later life? It addresses three important issues from the Indian perspective: children's school readiness at age five; families' readiness for school; and, most importantly, the readiness of schools for children. India is one of many countries across the global South facing an early learning crisis. High qualit...

Strengths of the Disadvantaged

Based on the author’s doctoral dissertation, the book makes an emphatic plea for a strength-based educational strategy for disadvantaged primary grade children. In this context it focusses on some cognitive and socio-emotional strengths of these children and suggests ways in which these can be capitalized upon in the teaching-learning situation to make the learning process more effective for them. A highlight of the book is a stimulating foreword by the internationally acknowledged, eminent Indian psychologist, Prof. Durganand Sinha. Other highlights include an exhaustive review of researches both from India and abroad on six major variables—field dependence, creativity, visual modality preference, cooperation, dependency and delay of gratification which provides excellent resource material for researchers and students of Child Development and Educational Psychology. Also of interest are a set of informative case studies of two contrasting groups of high and low achieving children from the resettlement colonies of Delhi which offer revealing insights regarding priorities in child rearing and their relationship with school achievement.

Societal hierarchies in the form of caste, gender, religion and class continue to deprive a large percentage of young children in India of learning opportunities, leading to intergenerational poverty. Existing research indicates that this cycle can be broken by providing appropriate early childhood care and education. Early Childhood Education for Marginalized Children in India reviews India's achievements and challenges, and identifies the complex issues related to providing early childhood education to children from marginalized communities. The book presents evidence-based approaches to developing and scaling up good quality early childhood education programmes. It explores what 'quality' means in the Indian context and identifies core elements that must be integral to all initiatives that aim to promote holistic development, while addressing India's significant scale and sociocultural diversity. The available literature has mostly discussed information from Western nations and the book attempts to address this gap.

The goal of the workshop was to continue to fill in gaps in knowledge and explore opportunities for discourse through a process of highlighting the science and practice. Social Integration of the Deaf

The problem of social integration has been discussed as viewed by the deaf themselves. The viewpoint of hearing members of the society who come into contact with the deaf has also been taken care of. The opinion of the employers about the employability of the non-hearing members of the society especially in the light of their firsthand experience makes this publication a significant contribution in its category. Besides the empirical information and analyses, the details have been illustrated with visual diagrams. To make it more realistic and useful some illustrations of the anatomy of the ear, sign language, etc., are also included in the book
