We Will Be Heard

In We Will Be Heard, noted political scientist Jo Freeman chronicles the struggles of women in the United States for political power. Most of their stories are little-known, but Freeman's compelling portrait of women working for change reminds us that women have never been silent in the political affairs of the nation. From J. Ellen Foster's address to the 1892 Republican Convention to Nancy Pelosi's 2007 election as the first female Speaker of the House, women have worked to influence politics at every level. Well before most could vote, women campaigned for candidates and lobbied to shape public policy. Men welcomed their work, but not their ideas. Even with equal suffrage women faced many barriers to full political participation. The fifteen case studies of women's struggles for political influence in this book provide the historical context for today's political events. Starting with an overview of when and why political women have been studied, the three sections of the book look at different ways in whi

Dyspraxia and its Management (Psychology Revivals)

Dyspraxia is a disorder of voluntary, purposeful, learned movement and is one of the most common sequelae of stroke, head-injury, neoplasm and abnormal ageing. It is also a major complicating factor in the assessment and treatment of acquired language, visual-spatial and other movement disorders. Dyspraxics are found not only in specialist neurological units, but also in rehabilitation centres, general medical and surgical wards, geriatric units and in the community. Despite this there was little systematic discussion of dyspraxia in major texts on stroke, head injury, rehabilitation or movement disorders at the time. Originally published in 1986, one aim of this book was to correct the imba...

$pam, $cam, Thank You, Ma'am

For many years the author has, like most computer users, been receiving spam emails that he used to bin straight away - until one of the more outrageous ones caught his eye. Then he began to read them more carefully and, over the course of six years, selected outstanding examples of 'scam' literature. The author was especially attracted by the inventiveness of the senders, their very particular use of the English language, and the variety of the scams on offer. This ebook scrupulously presents those emails as they were received in terms of layout, vocabulary, and spelling. The author's only intervention has been to rearrange them in eight thematic chapters and for obvious reasons, to disable their various 'links'.Having worked on this project for years, the author discovered that a fair amount of people actually had taken the bait and been duped by these mails. Needless to say, the author did not send the replies that you are about to read. They have been added to serve as a light-hearted warning against tricksters, fraudsters, swindlers, et al, who seek to extract often significant sums of money from the unwary.

Brisbane

Beginning with Native American encampments on the slopes and valleys of San Bruno Mountain, through Spanish occupation and Mexican land grants, to todayas vibrant suburban community, Brisbaneas story is an intriguing one. The town was either named for newspaperman Arthur Brisbane, or for the Australian coastal city of Brisbane, depending on the story. During the Great Depression, many people wanting to escape crowded San Francisco for a simpler, less urban life found it in Brisbane, which began with dairies and ranches and gradually grew up along the hillsides radiating from Visitacion Avenue. Brisbane has always been known for its spirit of independence, and the people here have been able to participate in small-town democracy more fully than in larger cities.

Wellsboro

Wellsboro, the county seat of Tioga County, owes much of its vitality to dense forests, abundant wildlife, and mountainous terrain. Named by the National Park Service as a Natural Landmark in 1968, nearby Pine Creek Gorge was introduced by George Washington Sears, better known as "Nessmuk," in 1860 and later publicized as "the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania." A weeklong Laurel Festival, organized in 1938, celebrates the canyon, the state flower, and Wellsboro. The Laurel Parade and the Laurel Queen coronation conclude the festivities each year. Wellsboro also owes its long-term prosperity to agriculture, logging, mining, and industry, all of which have contributed to the town's economic survival and growth. Corning Glass Works, a shining example of industrial innovation, made Wellsboro "the Christmas Bulb Capital of the World." Described as quaint, Wellsboro is often compared to a New England village. In addition to a row of antique gaslights lining the boulevard, the Penn-Wells Hotel, the Arcadia Theatre, and Dunham's Department Store, all of which date to the early 1900s, add to Main Street's charm, while the Green features a fountain statue of "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod."
