Katherine of Alexandria was a major object of devotion within medieval Europe, ranking second only to the Virgin Mary in the canon of female saints. Yet despite her undoubted importance, relatively little is known about the significance and function of her cult within the German-speaking territories that stood at the heart of Europe. Anne Simon's study adds a welcome new interdisciplinary perspective to the study of Saint Katherine and the wider ecclesiastical landscape of a medieval Europe poised on the edge of religious change. Taking as a case study the wealthy and politically influential merchant city of Nuremberg, this book draws on a wide variety of textual and visual sources to explor...

Německá barokní kázání vzniklá v českých zemích představují dosud jednu z méně probádaných oblastí filologie i dějin teologie. Tato edice bohemikálních tisků, dominikánských duchovních promluv z let 1715–1761, přibližuje téma prostřednictvím několika konkrétních ukázek. Kniha obsahuje komentovaná vydání čtyř německých a čtyř českých textů svátečních a příležitostných kázání z fondu historické knihovny řádu bratří kazatelů v konventu sv. Jiljí v Praze. Německé promluvy jsou opatřeny zrcadlovými překlady a edici doplňuje rozsáhlá úvodní studie. Kniha je určena jak odborníkům, tak laickým zájemcům o barokní homiletiku.

Bacchus and Civic Order

Lining the streets inside the city's gates, clustered in its center, and thinly scattered among its back quarters were Augsburg's taverns and drinking rooms. These institutions ranged from the poorly lit rooms of backstreet wine sellers to the elaborate marble halls frequented by society's most privileged members. Urban drinking rooms provided more than food, drink, and lodging for their guests. They also conferred upon their visitors a sense of social identity commensurate with their status. Like all German cities, Augsburg during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries had a history shaped by the political events attending the Reformation, the post-Reformation, and the Thirty Years' War; i...

Contemporary Homo Ludens

Play allows the fulfilment of one’s dreams, yet also teaches subjugation to the norms governing daily life. Furthermore, traditional forms of play, transmitted from one generation to another, guarantee a culture’s continuance and perpetuation in time. Contemporary forms of play integrate a populace, creating a specific community of laughter which places a high value on individuality and the ability to lead social games. Play invalidates social divisions, but also diversifies behaviours through the introduction of changes in the rules, depending on the age of those engaged. Furthermore, it adapts to the forms by which social reality is created, as well as that reality’s goals, which, in turn, impart sense and meaning to something which, of its own nature, seems deprived thereof.
