The current educational landscape demands more than traditional literacy skills to equip learners with the necessary tools to thrive in the modern world. The traditional focus on reading and writing print text may not be sufficient to comprehend the diverse forms of meaning-making necessary for effective communication and understanding in diverse communities. This poses a crucial challenge for educators who aspire to foster engaged and critically aware learners who can navigate the complexities of contemporary society. Arts-Based Multiliteracies for Teaching and Learning offers a transformative solution by advocating for a pedagogy of multiliteracies centered on arts-based approaches. By redefining literacy to encompass diverse modalities such as dance, drama, music, visual arts, and multi-media, this book challenges educators to expand their understanding of literacy beyond traditional boundaries. The book provides a compelling rationale for integrating arts-based multiliteracies across all levels and curricular areas.

Enhancing Educators' Theoretical and Practical Understandings of Critical Literacy

This Element explores ways to promote critical literacy in teacher education. First, the authors define critical literacy in the context of teacher education through established theoretical frameworks and models of critical literacy pedagogy and share their collective findings on critical literacy research over the course of a decade. Building from these theoretical understandings of critical literacy, they outline ways to actualize critical literacy in teacher education as a transformative pedagogy coupled with resources and activities that support equitable teaching practices. Next, they illustrate how adaptive teaching supports critical literacy pedagogy and underscore autoethnography as a reflective tool to engage pre-service teachers in critical literacy practice. They model this approach with mentor text analyses using critical literacy as a lens to facilitate critically-oriented mindsets in teachers through visioning. They conclude with implications for classroom practice at the intersections of critical literacy and teacher preparation and provide directions for future research.

Negotiating Identities

Immigration is even more hotly debated in Europe than in the United States. In this pivotal work of action and discourse analysis, Riva Kastoryano draws on extensive fieldwork--including interviews with politicians, immigrant leaders, and militants--to analyze interactions between states and immigrants in France and Germany. Making frequent comparisons to the United States, she delineates the role of states in constructing group identities and measures the impact of immigrant organization and mobilization on national identity. Kastoryano argues that states contribute directly and indirectly to the elaboration of immigrants' identity, in part by articulating the grounds on which their groups ...

Still Life with Tornado

'Moving, unapologetically strange, skilfully constructed.... Read this book, whatever your age. You may find it’s the exact shape and size of the hole in your heart.' New York Times Sixteen-year-old Sarah can't draw. This is a problem, because as long as she can remember, she has 'done the art.' She thinks she's having an existential crisis. And she might be right; she does keep running into past and future versions of herself as she wanders the urban ruins of Philadelphia. Or maybe she's finally waking up to the tornado that is her family, the tornado that six years ago sent her once-beloved older brother flying across the country for a reason she can't quite recall. After decades of stay...
