Most business schools use case studies in their courses. However, these are typically based on past cases and assigned to students to solve. This book describes a new approach for teaching with case studies, which was developed and applied successfully at TUM School of Management. In this approach, student teams write and solve their own case study on a topic concerning current and future businesses. A case can thus be on their own startup or a strategic decision of existing companies. During the course, the students receive intensive coaching while selecting and developing the case topic by the course advisors as well as feedback by industry experts and executives for whom the case is actually a burning question. The authors present 17 cases covering strategic questions for startups and technology companies such as Deutsche Post, BMW, Ryanair, Lufthansa, Stadtwerke München, Fielmann, adidas, Siemens, Caribou Biosciences, eon, Airbus, Unicredit and UBS.

This thesis deals with natural slope-movements of the earthflow-type. The main thematic focus of the work is on the investigation of the so-called source areas located in the upper parts of the affected slopes. On the basis of two present-day and socio-economically relevant case studies in Northern Italy selected aspects of the source areas were investigated. This was done mainly by means of numerical modelling. In one case study the numerical modelling concept was combined with an inverse modelling strategy. Generally, the results obtained in both case studies demonstrate the importance of detailed field investigations as basis for numerical models. The determinateness of the modelled problem depends on the availability of such data, which is limited by the large dimensions of the investigated phenomena and by the heterogeneity of the involved materials as well as the uncertainties underlying the determination of the geometry of these problems.

Did you know that we can learn things about ourselves (humans) and our behaviour without directly studying ourselves? Scientists have for years studied all kinds of animals, to gain a better insight into their strategies for survival, both alone and together. And we are now finding out that these studies can teach us a lot about us and our world – from ecosystem functioning, to behaviour, to health. This Collection examines what we have learned from animals, ranging from microscopic invertebrates to fish and mammals. We look in particular at what different animals can teach us about human behaviour, about how life has evolved and its diversity, and about how the ecosystem on our planet functions. We hope you enjoy reading about all the fascinating things we can learn from the animals we share out planet with!
Two decades after the fall of communism in Eastern Europe and one decade into the twenty-first century, European music remains one of the most powerful forces for shaping nationalism. Using intensive fieldwork throughout Europe -- from participation in alpine foot pilgrimages to studies of the grandest music spectacle anywhere in the world, the Eurovision Song Contest -- Philip V. Bohlman reveals the ways in which music and nationalism intersect in the shaping of the New Europe. Focus: Music, Nationalism, and the Making of the New Europe begins with the emergence of the European nation-state in the Middle Ages and extends across long periods during which Europe’s nations used music to comp...
