The first ICXOM congress held in Cambridge was the brain-child of Dr. Ellis Cosslett, founder of the Electron Optics Section of the Cavendish Laboratory. Dr. Cosslett pioneered research in x-ray optics and microanalysis and retained a close interest in all subject applications for this area of research, including physics, materials science, chemistry, and biology. X-Ray Optics and Microanalysis 1992 was held in his memory. At a special symposium, friends and colleagues reviewed the present status of research in x-ray optics and microanalysis. S.J. Pennycook of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, D.B. Williams of Lehigh University, J.A. Venables et al. of Arizona State University and Sussex University, and C. Jacobsen et al. of SUNY, Stony Brook are among the researchers whose papers are included in this volume.

IN THE LIGHT OF THE ELECTRON MICROSCOPE IN THE SHADOW OF THE NOBEL PRIZE

ENGLISH Nearly ninety and still in surprisingly good condition. Like no other research tool the electron microscope by the brothers Ernst and Helmut Ruska and their brother-in-law Bodo von Borries marks the dawn of modernity. Their avant-garde idea of 1931 to examine under a microscope with electrons has expanded human vision until today. The world's first commercial overmicroscope for discoveries in the world of the smallest followed in Berlin 1939. 1948 the German development and application of overmicroscopy was revived in Düsseldorf. As a key instrument of research it has completed a triumphant march and it has won the attention of the Nobel Prize Committee for awards twice. 1986 the No...

Cryo-EM, as it is currently practiced in many laboratories, is limited to the visualization of molecules that are in thermal equilibrium at the time before freezing. A further limitation is that the existing software does not fully exploit the information that is contained in the images of large ensembles of molecules in thermal equilibrium. This book is a collection of recent articles by the author, reprinted with introductions, and they mainly describe two novel methods in cryo-EM, one computational and the other experimental that requires the use of a microfluidic device. Both methods have the capacity to shed light on the dynamic behavior of biomolecules. Combined, they greatly expand th...

Crystal Clear

The main body of this book contains the hitherto unpublished autobiographies of both William Lawrence Bragg, an innovative scientist who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1915, and his wife, Alice, a Mayor of Cambridge and National Chairman of Marriage Guidance. Their autobiographies give unusual insights into the lives and times of two distinguished people and the real personalities behind their public appearance.
