Retinoic acid-related orphan receptors regulate autophagy and cell survival in cardiac myocytes during hypoxic stress

Introduction: Autophagy is a highly conserved evolutionary process that regulates cell quality control through protein degradation, organelle turnover, and recycling of cellular components by fusing with lysosomes. Defects in autophagy can lead to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress from impaired mitochondrial clearance by mitophagy. These defects are commonly associated with chronic human diseases such as cancer, myocardial infarction, neurodegenerative diseases, and aging. Aim: Herein, we show that the gene Retinoic Acid-Related Orphan Receptors α (Rora) is cardioprotective through modulation of autophagy and clearance of damaged ROS-producing mitochondria in card...

Adaptation Biology and Medicine

Although the entire evolution of life is an adaptation right from the coming-together of the elements and reaching to human life as we know today, the realization of the adaptation biology as a discipline is relatively recent. Furthermore, subcellular basis of gradual adaptation of body systems in stressful conditions is still a greate mystery of biology. The present book attempts to fill that gap. It is known that such an adaptation not only increases tolerance of the body to that given stress but also to other challenges. A complete knowledge of this cross protection needs to be defined and exp;oited to improve patient care. The book includes chapters describing subcellular adaptations; ad...

Human Stem Cell Manual

This manual is a comprehensive compilation of "methods that work" for deriving, characterizing, and differentiating hPSCs, written by the researchers who developed and tested the methods and use them every day in their laboratories. The manual is much more than a collection of recipes; it is intended to spark the interest of scientists in areas of stem cell biology that they may not have considered to be important to their work. The second edition of the Human Stem Cell Manual is an extraordinary laboratory guide for both experienced stem cell researchers and those just beginning to use stem cells in their work. - Offers a comprehensive guide for medical and biology researchers who want to use stem cells for basic research, disease modeling, drug development, and cell therapy applications - Provides a cohesive global view of the current state of stem cell research, with chapters written by pioneering stem cell researchers in Asia, Europe, and North America - Includes new chapters devoted to recently developed methods, such as iPSC technology, written by the scientists who made these breakthroughs

Stem Cells

Stem cell biology has drawn tremendous interest in recent years as it promises cures for a variety of incurable diseases. This book deals with the basic and clinical aspects of stem cell research and involves work on the full spectrum of stem cells isolated today. It also covers the conversion of stem cell types into a variety of useful tissues which may be used in the future for transplantation therapy. It is thus aimed at undergraduates, postgraduates, scientists, embryologists, doctors, tissue engineers and anyone who wishes to gain some insight into stem cell biology. This book is important as it is comprehensive and covers all aspects of stem cell biology, from basic research to clinical applications. It will have 33 chapters written by renowned stem cell scientists worldwide. It will be up-to-date and all the chapters include self-explanatory figures, color photographs, graphics and tables. It will be easy to read and give the reader a complete understanding and state of the art of the exciting science and its applications.

Circadian Medicine

Circadian Medicine

Circadian rhythms, the biological oscillations based around our 24-hour clock, have a profound effect on human physiology and healthy cellular function. Circadian Rhythms: Health and Disease is a wide-ranging foundational text that provides students and researchers with valuable information on the molecular and genetic underpinnings of circadian rhythms and looks at the impacts of disruption in our biological clocks in health and disease. Circadian Rhythms opens with chapters that lay the fundamental groundwork on circadian rhythm biology. Section II looks at the impact of circadian rhythms on major organ systems. Section III then turns its focus to the central nervous system. The book then closes with a look at the role of biological rhythms in aging and neurodegeneration. Written in an accessible and informative style, Circadian Rhythms: Health and Disease, will be an invaluable resource and entry point into this fascinating interdisciplinary field that brings together aspects of neuroscience, cell and molecular biology, and physiology.

Stem Cell and Gene-Based Therapy

Regenerative medicine – stem cell and gene-based therapy – offers a new approach for restoring function of damaged organs and tissues. This is the first book to cover the major new aspects and field of regenerative medicine. This title is therefore a timely addition to the literature. It brings together the major approaches to regenerative medicine in one text, which ensures that techniques learnt in one discipline are disseminated across other areas of medicine.

Because of the huge potential of human embryonic stem (hES) cells, especially the newly developed human induced pluripotent stem (hiPS) cells, in disease treatment and life quality improvement, enormous efforts have been made to develop new methodologies to translate lab discoveries in stem cell research into bed-side clinical technologies. In Human Embryonic and Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells: Lineage-Specific Differentiation Protocols, experts in the field present a comprehensive collection of protocols designed for labs around the world. The topics covered in this detailed volume include techniques used for maintenance of hES and iPS cells in either small or large scale, techniques for di...
