Galerkin Finite Element Methods for Parabolic Problems

My purpose in this monograph is to present an essentially self-contained account of the mathematical theory of Galerkin finite element methods as applied to parabolic partial differential equations. The emphases and selection of topics reflects my own involvement in the field over the past 25 years, and my ambition has been to stress ideas and methods of analysis rather than to describe the most general and farreaching results possible. Since the formulation and analysis of Galerkin finite element methods for parabolic problems are generally based on ideas and results from the corresponding theory for stationary elliptic problems, such material is often included in the presentation. The basi...

Galerkin Finite Element Methods for Parabolic Problems

This book provides insight into the mathematics of Galerkin finite element method as applied to parabolic equations. The revised second edition has been influenced by recent progress in application of semigroup theory to stability and error analysis, particulatly in maximum-norm. Two new chapters have also been added, dealing with problems in polygonal, particularly noncovex, spatial domains, and with time discretization based on using Laplace transformation and quadrature.

Partial Differential Equations with Numerical Methods

Partial Differential Equations with Numerical Methods

The main theme is the integration of the theory of linear PDE and the theory of finite difference and finite element methods. For each type of PDE, elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic, the text contains one chapter on the mathematical theory of the differential equation, followed by one chapter on finite difference methods and one on finite element methods. The chapters on elliptic equations are preceded by a chapter on the two-point boundary value problem for ordinary differential equations. Similarly, the chapters on time-dependent problems are preceded by a chapter on the initial-value problem for ordinary differential equations. There is also one chapter on the elliptic eigenvalue problem and eigenfunction expansion. The presentation does not presume a deep knowledge of mathematical and functional analysis. The required background on linear functional analysis and Sobolev spaces is reviewed in an appendix. The book is suitable for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students of applied mathematics and engineering.

This book is a tribute to Professor Ian Hugh Sloan on the occasion of his 80th birthday. It consists of nearly 60 articles written by international leaders in a diverse range of areas in contemporary computational mathematics. These papers highlight the impact and many achievements of Professor Sloan in his distinguished academic career. The book also presents state of the art knowledge in many computational fields such as quasi-Monte Carlo and Monte Carlo methods for multivariate integration, multi-level methods, finite element methods, uncertainty quantification, spherical designs and integration on the sphere, approximation and interpolation of multivariate functions, oscillatory integral...

Numerical Analysis and Its Applications

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the Third International Conference on Numerical Analysis and Its Applications, NAA 2004, held in Rousse, Bulgaria in June/July 2004. The 68 revised full papers presented together with 8 invited papers were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement. All current aspects of numerical analysis are addressed. Among the application fields covered are computational sciences and engineering, chemistry, physics, economics, simulation, fluid dynamics, visualization, etc.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Numerical Methods and Applications, NMA 2014, held in Borovets, Bulgaria, in August 2014. The 34 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 56 submissions for inclusion in this book. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: Monte Carlo and quasi-Monte Carlo methods; metaheuristics for optimization problems; advanced numerical methods for scientific computing; advanced numerical techniques for PDEs and applications; solving large engineering and scientific problems with advanced mathematical models; numerical simulations and back analysis in civil and mechanical engineering.

In the post World War II era, the Mathematics Research Center (MRC) was one of the earliest comprehensive examples of collaboration between the government and a university. By taking a broad view of mathematics that embraced both the pure and applied branches, the MRC provided a model of an interdisciplinary effort that interacted very well with the spectrum of sciences. This book deals with the complex and challenging organizational and scientific issues that arose in the operation of this center.
