Sandman's Castle
Written for Dame Evelyn Glennie as part of the “50 for 50” project to celebrate her 50th birthday, Sandman’s Castle sees Ho draw a multitude of sounds from a single tam-tam, most notably by having the player use an array of objects to strike or rub against the instrument. Often, Sandman’s Castle is spacious and gestural, allowing time for the rich resonance of the tam-tam to be savoured. Elsewhere, animal-like scratchings intensify to produce dense rolls that display the deep power of the instrument.
Kickin' It
Ho explores a range of performance practices and playing techniques in Kickin’ It. Movements packed with precariousness and frenzy sit alongside others that bathe in the resonant spaces between gestures. Nostalgia
Nostalgia was originally intended as an encore piece for Ho’s percussion concerto The Shaman. Now it is available as a stand-alone arrangement for solo piano. The evocative and lyrical lines of the original work for vibraphone also lends well to the sustained resonance of the piano. Ho expresses a sense of nostalgia throughout the work with simple meolody lines and ebbing accompaniment. The work also has virtuosic flare with fast cascading lines and textural flourishes. Nostalgia is an excellent work for creating a beautiful and thoughtful point within recital programmes.
Whimsical Sketches of Fanciful Birds
Ho’s Whimsical Sketches of Fanciful Birds is ideal for saxophonists looking for an adventurous and colourful recital work.
