In Book I of the "Aeneid", Aeneas is shipwrecked on the coast of North Africa, near where the Phoenician queen Dido is building a city that will become Carthage. Aeneas and Dido meet. Their doomed love is set against Aeneas' destiny as founding father of Rome. Edited by Keith Maclennan, this volume makes Virgil's work more accessible to today's students, by setting it in its literary and historical context and taking account of the most recent scholarship and critical approaches to Virgil. The edition includes a full introduction which covers Virgil's life and writings, his literary predecessors, a summary of the epic poem's plot, an exploration of Rome, Carthage and Dido's role, explanation of the metre, and some notes on translating and reading the poem. As well as the introduction, the volume contains the original Latin text, in-depth annotation to explain language and content, a glossary and a comprehensive vocabulary list.

Visionary, scholar, idealist, poet and author of a momentous epic and other timeless works, Wishart's Virgil is a man of contradictions: celibate but capable of great love; stuffy, sometimes prudish but often extremely warm and open; shy but with a talent for friendship and a certain magnetism. Through his eyes we gain an oblique view of great historical events: the assassination of Caesar, the downfall of Pompey and the tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra. He resists involvement in politics until fate leads him inexorably to the meeting with Octavian that is to result in the commission of his masterpiece, THE AENEID.

The Aeneid of Virgil

Virgil—Publius Vergilius Maro—was born at Andes near Mantua, in the year 70 B.C. His life was uneventful, though he lived in stirring times, and he passed by far the greater part of it in reading his books and writing his poems, undisturbed by the fierce civil strife which continued to rage throughout the Roman Empire, until Octavian, who afterwards became the Emperor Augustus, defeated Antony at the battle of Actium. Though his father was a man of humble origin, Virgil received an excellent education, first at Cremona and Milan, and afterwards at Rome. He was intimate with all the distinguished men of his time, and a personal friend of the Emperor. After the publication of his second wo...

Publius Vergilius Maro (70 BCE-19 BCE), later called Virgilius, and known in English as Virgil or Vergil, was a classical Roman poet. He was the author of epics in three modes: the Bucolics or Eclogues (37 BC), The Georgics (29 BC) and the substantially completed The Aeneid (19 BC), the last being an epic poem in the heroic mode, which comprised twelve books and became the Roman Empire's national epic. Biographical reconstruction supposes that Virgil was part of the circle of Maecenas, Octavian's capable agent d'affaires who sought to counter sympathy for Mark Antony among the leading families by rallying Roman literary figures to Octavian's side. It also appears that Virgil gained many conn...
