Old English Runes
This volume presents contributions to the conference Old English Runes Workshop, organised by the Eichstätt-München Research Unit of the Academy project Runic Writing in the Germanic Languages (RuneS) and held at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in March 2012. The conference brought together experts working in an area broadly referred to as Runology. Scholars working with runic objects come from several different fields of specialisation, and the aim was to provide more mutual insight into the various methodologies and theoretical paradigms used in these different approaches to the study of runes or, in the present instance more specifically, runic inscriptions generally assigned to the English and/or the Frisian runic corpora. Success in that aim should automatically bring with it the reciprocal benefit of improving access to and understanding of the runic evidence, expanding and enhancing insights gained within such closely connected areas of study of the Early-Mediaeval past.

Im Mittelpunkt stehen die west-, ost- und nordfriesischen Dialekte in den Niederlanden und in Deutschland, die westfriesische Standardsprache, die friesische Sprach- und Literaturgeschichte und das Altfriesische im Mittelalter. Einleitende Artikel geben ausführliche Informationen über die heutigen Institutionen und Aktivitäten der Forschung und der Sprachpflege. In 79 Artikeln von 45 Autoren möchte dieses Handbuch umfassend informieren und gleichzeitig die Kontakte zu den Nachbarfächern ausbauen.

Die Goldbrakteaten zeigen auf kleinstem Raum eine reiche Ikonographie, deren Vorbilder vornehmlich auf den Münzen und Medaillons der konstantinischen Ära zu finden sind. Diese Vorbilder werden einem komplexen Aneignungsprozess unterworfen, um damit das eigene religiöse Weltbild zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Ähnliches gilt für die Münzlegenden, die zunächst nachgeahmt, dann aber durch Runeninschriften ersetzt werden. Diese repräsentieren etwa ein Drittel aller bisher bekannten Inschriften im älteren Futhark. Runes Across the North Sea from the Migration Period and Beyond
Die Germanische Altertumskunde Online wird – wie bereits das in ihr aufgegangene Reallexikon – durch Ergänzungsbände begleitet. Diese Reihe umfasst Monographien ebenso wie Sammelbände zu spezifischen Themen aus Archäologie, Geschichte und Literaturwissenschaft. Damit wird der Inhalt der Datenbank um jene Aspekte erweitert, die einer ausführlichen Analyse bedürfen. Inzwischen sind bereits mehr als 100 Bände erschienen von Germanenproblemen in heutiger Sicht bis zur Germanischen Altertumskunde im Wandel.
Germanic Genitives
The papers in this volume focus on the dynamics of one specific cell in morphological paradigms – the genitive. The high amount of diachronic and synchronic variation in all Germanic languages makes the genitive a particularly interesting phenomenon since it allows us, for example, to examine comparable but slightly different diachronic pathways, the relation of synchronic and diachronic variation, and the interplay of linguistic levels (phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics). The findings in this book enhance our understanding of the genitive not only by describing its properties, but also by discussing its demarcation from functional competitors and related grammatical items. Under-researched aspects of well-described languages as well as from lesser-known languages (Faroese, Frisian, Luxembourgish, Yiddish) are examined. The papers included are methodologically diverse and the topics covered range from morphology, syntax, and semantics to the influence of (normative) grammars and the perception and prestige of grammatical items.
Das Eigene und das Fremde
Um zu generalisierenden Aussagen über typisch mittelalterliche Einstellungen gegenüber dem Fremdem zu gelangen, ist grundsätzlich von den Vorstellungen einzelner Autoren, von ihren Auffassungen vom Eigenen und vom Fremden auszugehen. Ausgerechnet an solchen Studien aber fehlt es. Hier setzt die vorliegende Arbeit an, die sich somit auch als Beitrag zur Geschichte hochmittelalterlicher Vorstellungen versteht.20 Sie geht von der grundsätzlichen Relationalität des Eigenen und des Fremden aus und fragt nach dem Verhältnis beider in den Darstellungen hochmittelalterlicher Autoren. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf der Untersuchung möglicher Funktionen von Fremdbeschreibungen.

This handbook aims at a state-of-the-art overview of both earlier and recent research into older, newer and emerging non-standard varieties (dialects, regiolects, sociolects, ethnolects, substandard varieties), transplanted varieties and daughter languages (mixed languages, creoles) of Dutch. The discussion concerns the theoretical embedding, potential interdisciplinary connections and the methodology of the studies at issue, keeping in mind comparability and generalizability of the findings. It presents general concepts and approaches in the broad domain of Dutch variation linguistics and the main developments in different varieties of Dutch and their offspring abroad. The book counts 47 chapters, written by over 40 scholars from the Netherlands, Flanders, Germany, England, South Africa, Australia, the USA, and Jamaica.
