This edited volume highlights the scientific contributions of Volker Mehrmann, a leading expert in the area of numerical (linear) algebra, matrix theory, differential-algebraic equations and control theory. These mathematical research areas are strongly related and often occur in the same real-world applications. The main areas where such applications emerge are computational engineering and sciences, but increasingly also social sciences and economics. This book also reflects some of Volker Mehrmann's major career stages. Starting out working in the areas of numerical linear algebra (his first full professorship at TU Chemnitz was in "Numerical Algebra," hence the title of the book) and mat...

Differential-algebraic Equations

Differential-algebraic equations are a widely accepted tool for the modeling and simulation of constrained dynamical systems in numerous applications, such as mechanical multibody systems, electrical circuit simulation, chemical engineering, control theory, fluid dynamics and many others. This is the first comprehensive textbook that provides a systematic and detailed analysis of initial and boundary value problems for differential-algebraic equations. The analysis is developed from the theory of linear constant coefficient systems via linear variable coefficient systems to general nonlinear systems. Further sections on control problems, generalized inverses of differential-algebraic operato...

Linear Algebra

This self-contained textbook takes a matrix-oriented approach to linear algebra and presents a complete theory, including all details and proofs, culminating in the Jordan canonical form and its proof. Throughout the development, the applicability of the results is highlighted. Additionally, the book presents special topics from applied linear algebra including matrix functions, the singular value decomposition, the Kronecker product and linear matrix equations. The matrix-oriented approach to linear algebra leads to a better intuition and a deeper understanding of the abstract concepts, and therefore simplifies their use in real world applications. Some of these applications are presented in detailed examples. In several ‘MATLAB-Minutes’ students can comprehend the concepts and results using computational experiments. Necessary basics for the use of MATLAB are presented in a short introduction. Students can also actively work with the material and practice their mathematical skills in more than 300 exercises.

On different concepts for the linearization of matrix polynomials and canonical decompositions of structured matrices with respect to indefinite sesquilinear forms

In this thesis, a novel framework for the construction and analysis of strong linearizations for matrix polynomials is presented. Strong linearizations provide the standard means to transform polynomial eigenvalue problems into equivalent generalized eigenvalue problems while preserving the complete finite and infinite eigenstructure of the problem. After the transformation, the QZ algorithm or special methods appropriate for structured linearizations can be applied for finding the eigenvalues efficiently. The block Kronecker ansatz spaces proposed here establish an innovative and flexible approach for the construction of strong linearizations in the class of strong block minimal bases penci...

Realization and Model Reduction of Dynamical Systems

This book celebrates Professor Thanos Antoulas's 70th birthday, marking his fundamental contributions to systems and control theory, especially model reduction and, more recently, data-driven modeling and system identification. Model reduction is a prominent research topic with wide ranging scientific and engineering applications.

Computation and Control II

This volume contains a collection of papers delivered by the partici pants at the second Conference on Computation and Control held at Mon tana State University in Bozeman, Montana from August 1-7, 1990. The conference, as well as this proceedings, attests to the vitality and cohesion between the control theorist and the numerical analyst that was adver tised by the first Conference on Computation and Control in 1988. The proceedings of that initial conference was published by Birkhiiuser Boston as the first volume of this same series entitled Computation and Control, Proceedings of the Bozeman Conference, Bozeman, Montana, 1988. Control theory and numerical analysis are both, by their very ...

In 1940 G. H. Hardy published A Mathematician's Apology, a meditation on mathematics by a leading pure mathematician. Eighty-two years later, An Applied Mathematician's Apology is a meditation and also a personal memoir by a philosophically inclined numerical analyst, one who has found great joy in his work but is puzzled by its relationship to the rest of mathematics.

This is a textbook on classical polynomial and rational approximation theory for the twenty-first century. Aimed at advanced undergraduates and graduate students across all of applied mathematics, it uses MATLAB to teach the field’s most important ideas and results. Approximation Theory and Approximation Practice, Extended Edition differs fundamentally from other works on approximation theory in a number of ways: its emphasis is on topics close to numerical algorithms; concepts are illustrated with Chebfun; and each chapter is a PUBLISHable MATLAB M-file, available online. The book centers on theorems and methods for analytic functions, which appear so often in applications, rather than on ...

Selected Papers of Alan Hoffman with Commentary

Dr Alan J Hoffman is a pioneer in linear programming, combinatorial optimization, and the study of graph spectra. In his principal research interests, which include the fields of linear inequalities, combinatorics, and matrix theory, he and his collaborators have contributed fundamental concepts and theorems, many of which bear their names. This volume of Dr Hoffman's selected papers is divided into seven sections: geometry; combinatorics; matrix inequalities and eigenvalues; linear inequalities and linear programming; combinatorial optimization; greedy algorithms; graph spectra. Dr Hoffman has supplied background commentary and anecdotal remarks for each of the selected papers. He has also ...
