First multi-year cumulation covers six years: 1965-70.
Based on a number of collaborative efforts between basic researchers and clinicians from different institutions in Leiden, this book covers the initial and promising results of these efforts. The role of the endothelium, especially of the coronary intravascular species is a relatively new and fascinating development in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease. Three major aspects of endothelial function receive attention in this volume: its regulatory role in myocardial function, evidence for which is gradually forthcoming, with possible great implications for disease states such as volume overload and failure its role in the calcium metabolism of vascular smooth muscle cells and the e...
In the 1940s I was struck by reports about many apparently healthy middle-aged men who dropped dead instantly from heart attacks. The causes of these sudden deaths were unknown. I was interested to discover physio-chemical characteristics of individuals with predictive value for the occurrence of these fatal heart attacks. The discovery ofpreventive variables would point ways to prevent this disease. In order to find relationships between mode of life and susceptibility to heart disease contrasting populations had to be studied. Variety - not a high degree of homogeneity in culture and habits - must be sought. After exploratory surveys in countries with supposed differences in dietary patter...
This is the fifth volume in this series on quantitative coronary arteriography (QCA) published over the last nine years. Research and applications in this exciting, field are covered in a total of 26 chapters by world renowned experts. This book is subdivided into a total of 6 parts, each emphasizing the latest progress in these respective fields. In Part One a comprehensive overview is given of the current knowledge and research in endothelial function, which is of eminent importance for the further understanding of the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease in patients. Fortunately, the use of QCA tools is not limited anymore to leading research institutes; over the last several years ...
