In Search of the Whip-poor-will Love Song

In Search of the Whip-poor-will Love Song takes the author, Charles Brookins Taylor Sr., on a journey using characters that represent three different generations in the search for the meaning of the whip-poor-will song. Through the combination of searching, observing, reminiscing, and dialoguing with others, he shows how the whip-poor-will song underscores what is said in Psalm 19:1, "The heavens declare the glory of God," a reminder that each creature or thing in God's creation has been given the innate ability to accomplish an ordained purpose in relating to Him and others, each in its own unique way. Taylor draws upon the Scriptures to remind us that God speaks to us through His visible a...

The Whip

The Whip is inspired by the true story of a woman, Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst (1812-1879) who lived most of her extraordinary life as a man. As a young woman in Rhode Island, she fell in love and had a child. Her husband was lynched and her baby killed. The destruction of her family drove her west to California, dressed as a man, to track down the murder. Charley became a renowned stagecoach driver. She killed a famous outlaw, had a secret love affair, and lived with a housekeeper who, unaware of her true sex, fell in love with her. Charley was the first woman to vote in America (as a man). Her grave lies in Watsonville, California.

Presenting recent advances in clinical diagnosis and treatment derived from an increased understanding of the biology of the hip, this unique text examines hip disease and pathophysiology through the lenses of kinematics, biomechanics, anatomy and metabolism. Opening chapters examine the impact of health care organization on hip care and prevalence and burden of osteoarthritis.Biomechanical considerations of the hip and gait pathomechanics in hip disease are then discussed, followed by chapters covering femoroacetabular impingement, possible links between OA and metabolic syndrome, osteonecrosis, osteoporosis and Paget’s disease. Considerations of risk reduction surrounding hip arthroplasty conclude the text, including device and surgical options for THA, hip sepsis and prevention of perioperative infection, and management of venous thromboembolism. Taken together, this represents a new and important context for the discussions and management of hip disease for orthopedic surgeons and researchers alike.
